      Hi all,

DD2 will be joining the Nanyang family next year. She is from a non-SAP primary school. Earlier, she had some reservations about joining NYGH as she was worried about being less than conversant in mandarin.

But her fears were put to ease after she attended the hour long DSA interview. DD2 told me the girls were given ample opportunity to talk and when the girls got stuck, the interviewers gently guided them through. It was only after this interview that she actually got to know the school better. The VP answered all her queries in a witty manner and she found that her fear of not being sufficiently conversant in mandarin was unfounded (as the rest of the participants were of more or less of the same standard).

DD2 is looking forward to her new school. I hope that my girl will benefit from the bicultural program offered by the school as I believe Bilinguallism will benefit my girl in years to come.

DD is looking forward to NYGH too... she should be joining its Bilingual class too!

Hope our girls will have an enjoyable time together in NYGH!! :celebrate:

Girl was very excited and told me about how beautiful and big HCI (been there once for SMOPS and she got lost!) and NYGH are. She asked why there was so much grass! 😂

        Oh My Gosh:

What is the fastest way to get to NYGH via DTL?

        (1) Alight at Sixth Avenue and walk to the School?
        (2) Alight at Tan Kah Kee station and take the bus
        (3) Or?

DTL -> 6th Ave take bus 2 stops is probably the fastest, I think

Not sure why gothere.sg says NYGH is walking distance from Sixth Avenue Station. :imcool:

But after a while, the students will get used to it. Our girls will only head there 4 years later (unless some inter-school events)

DD has been to NYGH a few times - It is comparatively smaller so not to worry 🙂

Wow, big brother can help to look after mei mei! 😄

DD2 visited NYGH during the open house in year 2017 and 2018. 😄

Welcome, Lee yl and Oh My Gosh! 😄

Wow, all your girls are so good in Chinese, envy envy..
My girl scored an A in PSLE (like what close to 70% of the cohort did 😆 ) but no regrets choosing the school, saved me 4 years of Chinese tuition fees. 🦆

Don’t worry about the negative comments.
My girl managed fine the last 4 years without external help.
The resources (notes/test papers/revision papers) provided are adequate in my opinion.
All girls will have access to the test papers.
Lower sec students will get sec 1/2 test papers at the same time.
              Similarly when in upper sec.
The girls just have to manage their time properly, be pro-active and make good use of resources available and they should do fine.

              All the best!
              Hi Lego,

Yesterday morning, I chanced upon one of your posts in another thread and it was so inspiring. 😄

Actually my hubby is very happy that DD2 is stepping out of her comfort zone to join a SAP school given that she comes from a non-SAP primary school.

Sometimes the difference between A and A* could be just 1 mark. 😄

Huh? Can save 4 years of tuition fees for Chinese ?? What’s your secret? I actually looked for one just in case DD2 couldn’t cope with it. 😂

Oh? Is there any negative comment? I only see positive things here. 😉

If you are coming from town-side, then can also alight at Tan Kah Kee station, change to a bus for 1 stop then cross the bridge.

                  KP:

My girl currently at NYGH. She was aso fr non-SAP pri.
During year 1, the chinese teacher insists those who did not take psle higher chinese to come early to school once a week b4 7am, for every week for half a year.
Dont care whether you got A* for psle chinese, so long dont have psle higher chinese must attend the remedial. I was shock.

Then in year 2, principal changed.
Students dont feel good as the new P spent lesser time on students compared to former P.

The good news under the new P is that those non-performing teachers are removed.

This is good news indeed as I have known of such teachers through feedback from my dd, lessons conducted by the teachers. I am glad that my dd's form teacher in Y3/4 is responsible as I can see improvement in the system after feedback during the PTM.

                  @Comfy,
Nice to hear that the form teachers are responsible.

It is reassuring to hear that improvements have been made after feedback during the PTM! V. Good!!

                  @KP,
This year, my elder girl (another IP school) happened to have a non-performing teacher in her class and I was shocked to hear that this teacher was asked to leave. I am very glad that DD1’s school P actually looked into this matter!!

My elder one’s school principal is also new to the school and before she came over I had my reservation too, haha. Maybe we should give them some time to settle down and familiarize with everything.

My DD2 only has an encounter with the VP during the hour long interview. She felt at ease and opened herself to talk because of this VP’s gentle guidance. For the open house itself, which she attended twice, only got to see “the exterior”. The encounter with the VP is the one that made her look forward to join the family.

                        @Lee yl

My gal was from non-SAP too. Hers was a co-ed, erm..’neighbourhood’ school where the percentage making to the express course in secondary school is about 60+ percent. So, the transition is greater.
Nevertheless, she settled well after making some new friends and is happy. 😄
Btw, the school also has a ‘angel mortal’ system for all newcomers.
Every sec 2 student will be assigned to take care of 1 newcomer (to write encouragement notes anonymously, give small gifts (optional) etc to help them get adjusted to the new school.
They would eventually reveal who the senior are.
The girls can always check with her ‘angel’ or other seniors for advices if she has any queries in future.

My child doesn’t go for Chinese tuition in her primary school years.
I coached her myself and I only focus on certain areas which are easy for me to handle 😆 .
I think there’s still a lot of difference between writing composition weekly and doing it once /twice in a term in school as what my girl does.
I know where she stands but it’s ok, I am not bothered whether it’s an A or A*.
PSLE is just a secondary school placement test to me, I’m very thankful that she just managed to meet the COP of the school by the decimal.
The good thing for my child is that she doesnt dislike Chinese.
I have ever asked her once (when she was doing a piece of Chinese homework) if she finds it tough and she said “the language is very nice”.
I think maybe it’s becoz it is not just an academic subject to her.
We do 唱k, watch dramas, shop online on 淘宝 in our daily lives. 😉

I don’t coach her anymore when she is in sec school .
She relies on the school Teachers for help.
She just do her teacher assigned homework dutifully.
(Chinese is the only subject that her teachers still do a file check once a year 😆 )
I do remind her to always make good use of the school provided resources.
Her Chinese teacher would share model composition written by peers and they are really good.
She tries to attend all supplementary lessons that the teacher give where possible. (Some are optional)
Closer to exams, she will practice the school’s past year test papers.
The Chinese test papers do come with answers.
I am very sure she has made improvements in her command of the language over the last 4 years.

I like the school very much, esp the Chinese values.
I don’t know a lot about the school, they are limited to my child’s own personal experience and what she does shares with me as I don’t join any parents group.
But they are the little things that she shared with me regarding the school life that makes me feel we have made the right choice. (Like she heard the announcement in the evening ‘chasing’ them home, telling them to go home and spend time with their family  , her hcl teacher specifically praising a very shy girl for her efforts in her first presentation in sec 1 etc. )
It’s not a walk in the park. They are ups and downs in her 4 years in the school but it all turned out well in the end.
She told me the sec 4 closure was very touching, some of her friends cried when singing a particular graduation song and she said she had to hold back tears too.

:hi5: about seeing the positive things.
Nothing is perfect in life, neither do I expect them to be. (Whether it’s the spouse, work, schools etc).
It makes me a happier person when I focus on the positive and not the negatives in life. 😄
