      Oh My Gosh:

DS is in HCI - Yes it is big; partly cos it is a combination of JC, High School and Boarding School. But after a while, the students will get used to it. Our girls will only head there 4 years later (unless some inter-school events)

DD has been to NYGH a few times - It is comparatively smaller so not to worry 🙂

Wow, big brother can help to look after mei mei! 😄

DD2 visited NYGH during the open house in year 2017 and 2018. 😄

TBH, DD has not gone for any Open House. Haha... her mind is already fixed on NYGH so we save the time and efforts 🙂

          @Lee yl

My gal was from non-SAP too. Hers was a co-ed, erm..’neighbourhood’ school where the percentage making to the express course in secondary school is about 60+ percent. So, the transition is greater.
Nevertheless, she settled well after making some new friends and is happy. 😄
Btw, the school also has a ‘angel mortal’ system for all newcomers.
Every sec 2 student will be assigned to take care of 1 newcomer (to write encouragement notes anonymously, give small gifts (optional) etc to help them get adjusted to the new school.
They would eventually reveal who the senior are.
The girls can always check with her ‘angel’ or other seniors for advices if she has any queries in future.

My child doesn’t go for Chinese tuition in her primary school years.
I coached her myself and I only focus on certain areas which are easy for me to handle 😆 .
I think there’s still a lot of difference between writing composition weekly and doing it once /twice in a term in school as what my girl does.
I know where she stands but it’s ok, I am not bothered whether it’s an A or A*.
PSLE is just a secondary school placement test to me, I’m very thankful that she just managed to meet the COP of the school by the decimal.
The good thing for my child is that she doesnt dislike Chinese.
I have ever asked her once (when she was doing a piece of Chinese homework) if she finds it tough and she said “the language is very nice”.
I think maybe it’s becoz it is not just an academic subject to her.
We do 唱k, watch dramas, shop online on 淘宝 in our daily lives. 😉

I don’t coach her anymore when she is in sec school .
She relies on the school Teachers for help.
She just do her teacher assigned homework dutifully.
(Chinese is the only subject that her teachers still do a file check once a year 😆 )
I do remind her to always make good use of the school provided resources.
Her Chinese teacher would share model composition written by peers and they are really good.
She tries to attend all supplementary lessons that the teacher give where possible. (Some are optional)
Closer to exams, she will practice the school’s past year test papers.
The Chinese test papers do come with answers.
I am very sure she has made improvements in her command of the language over the last 4 years.

I like the school very much, esp the Chinese values.
I don’t know a lot about the school, they are limited to my child’s own personal experience and what she does shares with me as I don’t join any parents group.
But they are the little things that she shared with me regarding the school life that makes me feel we have made the right choice. (Like she heard the announcement in the evening ‘chasing’ them home, telling them to go home and spend time with their family  , her hcl teacher specifically praising a very shy girl for her efforts in her first presentation in sec 1 etc. )
It’s not a walk in the park. They are ups and downs in her 4 years in the school but it all turned out well in the end.
She told me the sec 4 closure was very touching, some of her friends cried when singing a particular graduation song and she said she had to hold back tears too.

:hi5: about seeing the positive things.
Nothing is perfect in life, neither do I expect them to be. (Whether it’s the spouse, work, schools etc).
It makes me a happier person when I focus on the positive and not the negatives in life. 😄

                @Lego,

Thank you for sparing the time and effort to reply my post and sharing all those helpful tips!

Wow, your DD must have been one of the top scorers from her primary school! Yes, I would imagine the transition to be relatively tough. I just hope my girl can settle down quickly.

Oh, that’s nice. A small note of encouragement or a small gift will make my girl happy. 😄
It’s always comforting to know that there’s a senior looking over you who could be a resource when needed.

My girl also likes to 唱K but she can only sing one Chinese song, 月亮代表我的心。 :rotflmao:
Most of the time it’s English songs for her. My DD2’s spoken mandarin is less than ideal but she likes 作文 and is reasonably good at it. Recently she was very into Yanxi Palace but I find some parts of the script a bit unbelievable. 😂
One thing I agree, maybe through all these small little things in our daily lifes that allow the kids to be exposed to Chinese, ihe use of the language will come to them naturally.

It is reassuring to hear that over the past 4 years, your DD has make improvements to the command of the language. I believe my girl has the potential to do better in her command of mandarin too and I hope the school’s bilingual prog can help her realise her potential.

I like the part where you mentioned about the HCL teacher who specially praised a shy girl for her efforts when she did her first presentation. Reminds me of my girl telling me about the school VP who gently lead them to open up during the DSA interview, making the group feel at ease. Seems like the school culture is caring and patient to the girls. I am sure my daughter will be in good hands.

Thanks so much and now I know the school better. Like you, I am also not any of my girls’ parent group. It is also through some small sharings from my girls that I get to know their schools better. Thus, all your sharings are definitely valuable to me (and other new NYGH parents).
