It shows you how close the current standards near the top are. Except for the very top scorers (280+) there is very little difference between the ability of the students. I know someone last year who got 2 A* and 2 A and received 264. Another person this year got 3 A* and 1 A (probably high A) and received only 253. Another student this year - who I hear was devastated by her grade - got 3 As and 1 B and got 220. Well, that grade is inconsistent with MOE's claim that 4 grades of 74% are basically equivalent to T-score of 200. (The fact that the new range for AL 5 is 65% - 74% is not relevant to this issue. As far as MOE is concerned, a grade of 74% has the same value as a grade of 65%.)

But the change overall is good. I think it is part of the national objective to ensure that children take mother tongue seriously. The grading change makes it more important than ever. Also, I think schools at the top end will have to take a wider range of student grade at the bottom end of their cohort (from the median to the current COP level). Such narrow distinctions are meaningless.

But I think the new system will increase stress.

I am all too excited to see what will be the COP stated in the 2021 PSLE booklet.

My guess is 6 or less for some of the super popular IP schools. 8 or less for RVHS, VS, CHS, etc. 9 or less for the mid 240s to 250 schools. 10 or less for the under 240 to mid 240s schools. 12 points for 230, to 240, 16 points for 215 to 230, 20 for 200 to 215, and 24 for schools with current COP 188 to 200.

I don't see how it is inconsistent. What MOE says suggests that the mean for each subject is around 74%.

I think MOE probably knows how close the standards near the top are, hence the change. The difference between 250 and 262 is only 3 points per subject, and may only be 2 MCQs and 1 careless mistake per subject.

3A* + 1A with 253 probably low A* and/or not high A. I know someone this year 1A* + 3A with 249. I think new AL system better for the first than the second, no? These 2 children probably only average 1-2 raw marks difference per subject, but can be more than 2 or more AL points different..

If a child score 65%, it says they are no worse than other kids, there is still time to grow and develop in the same tier sec sch. Society has matured to embrace every child.

How does a child know about that dream school? How has the mentality of "if i do not score well to get to that dream school, I will have no future" get to our kids? Enough for them to end their lives?

A bright child, not the most hardworking i heard, but an avid reader, quick in learning. *, tscore removed, top school.


Last words were "i have no future."

Mum still desvastated, "if my child is still beside me now, no A1s can replace. If my child is still alive, what is so important about o level, exams, scores?

Now when I see my kids, no longer the same way. When times are tough, give our kids plenty of hugs, tell them they are loved in this world, there is beauty all around.

I suspect these ideas are drummed in young, defenseless kids as threats by highly anxious parents who do not know how to curb their own stresses & anxieties, this transferring to kids. :nunchuk:

Many KSP forummers had alr pointed out, a PSLE scores are only 3-digit numbers to allocate students to sec sch places. Loving parents shld send more positive signals & constructively help Pri sch kids to harness their abilities, maximize them now if possible & steer them to sec sch that provide the environment their child needs, owise patiently wait for a right time in their growing journey to apply themselves. There will always be opportunities for late bloomers. But if you push too hard & beyond the child, these poor hapless child will buckled under your pressurizing deeds. :sad:

estee....you know our DC school. The dream of getting into xxxx school is so strong among the kids, even P3 already start to talk about it. Are they naturally induced by parents? Not all actually....I would dare to say most are naturally coming from the friends and school within. Camaraderie plays a part in it. When the big graduating korkors start coming back to the school for a visit or see their teachers.....the boys will go googoogaga over what school they are in. When any child does not conform to that path, you know lah...the flurry of questions start flying.
