Blobbi:
No no....Hairy Maclary is by Lynley Dodd...Julia Donaldson is another author who wrote Gruffalo series lah.Hee, there you go, kids_r_innocent! hquek's got quite a few too.
Its true - the Richard Scarry books are very busy with a lot of illustrations and words filling up the entire page. At the time, my son was sight reading (now I know the term. Last time, thot that wasn't considered reading - actually still have my doubts but n'er mind lah. Now can read good enough!).
I don't know if they're in the library - they have the big, hardcover sort and the small square sort that I got from the second hand bookstore at Holland V (although this is in the new bk section).
Oh yeah, dunno whether it's the same Donaldson that hquek mentioned, but there's Julia Donaldson's, http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=julia+donaldson&x=0&y=0. Verrrrry nice!
Plus Pamela Allen's Mr McGee books. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mr+mcgee+pamela+allen&x=0&y=0
These are very simple and fabulous books - laugh till peng some more.
For us, the Dr Seuss books. Yow!!
These books bring back warm memories,.
I have seen Richard Scarry books in the library. Those are typically the bigger sized hardcover books in JS section. Lynley Dodd also in JS section under author D.
Will look out for Pamela Allen. Thanks!! -

Hi Michteach,
Hi Blobbi,
Yes I agree!! The first book for 39 clues is the best, I think that is because Rick Riordan is the writer, he is also the author of Percy Jackson, the Percy Jackson series is another must-get series! Every book there is good!
I showed my son the Lightning Thief series, but he's not taking. There's a picture of some monster in front. Think he's not full recovered from Spiderwick
.
But I've noted the name, and such time that he is ready, I'll be sure to whip it out :). -
Blobbi:
Oh no!! So he was scared when he read Spiderwick? So what books is he reading now?

The worst part is, Spiderwick was so long ago, but the effects are so far reaching :(. My fault.

He's reading this series by Terry Deary called Classified, and is currently at the Discovery of Roswell. Not exactly non-scary reading, huh? But he's very much into spaceships, phenomena etc. Maybe so long as it's non fantasy, no beast coming out of toilet bowl type, he's fine.
Ok, I didn't pre-read again . But he doesn't seem spooked so far. -
Blobbi:
Lightning Thief?? gonna check that out. thanks MichTech.

blobbi, i think maybe cos your boy was quite young ba. Spiderwicks i reckon should be suitable for P3 and above (i mean the storyline rather than the difficult words). my boy did ask if it is real. my boy is more spooked by non-fiction books than fiction ones! i stay clear of Science books that carry bacteria titles or Horrible Histories cos they will definitely spook him out! -

Is Terry Deary good? Where did you get it from?:)
Maybe your son can read spiderwick when he gets older:)) -

Hey jedamum,
Lightning Thief?? gonna check that out. thanks MichTech.

You can watch the movie with him to excite him about it:) Is your boy in Pri 3 and above, any good books to jie sao for that age range, am quite blur about that age range, afraid I have to teach lower to mid pri one day and will be :stupid: -
jedamum:
Yah, I really regret about the books.
Lightning Thief?? gonna check that out. thanks MichTech.

The opening few books was quite innocent some more.
Hey, my son was like that about bacteria too! Last time when I brought him to the Science centre when there was an exhibit, he turned green. He still refuses to go near the section, but guess what? About a year ago, he became obsessed with diseases. That's how the Horrible Science books started, but he's also seen quite a few books on cancer etc (I'm terrified myself). Says he needs to know more to protect himself. Anyway, this phase keeps coming back. He still can't stand blood, but studying about diseases seems quite blood free, at this level anyway :). -
Michteach:
Michteach, he seems to like it. Looks rather dry to me actually, but I haven't read. The books are quite slim. We got them at the book fair at the Forum. Not sure it that's still on though.

Jedamum, has your son tried Jeri Telstar? By Nury Vitachi. They're quite slim books, only 3 titles are available. The 4th one is sold out everywhere. Nury Vitachi actually came to Singapore for a book signing, and my son was really thrilled to meet him. Except we already have the three books at home so we couldn't get his signature.
I think I recommended it before in the earlier pages of this thread, but just in case people need a book recc for the upcoming hols. I remember amazon saying its for the 9-12 crowd but I don't think so. The first one especially is for the younger crowd, but the level may have scaled up in bks 2 & 3. They're very science-y, I think. My son says they're loads of fun. Just light hearted reading.
Have fun!
[Michteach, these titles will work for you too for the lower primary kids you were talking about.]
