Yeah, don’t waste time on taking MT in JC if you’ve already secured a pass. The difference to your UAS is very little.

must understand \"S\" not nice for school statistics. :rotflmao: And doesn't look very nice on the certificate. Must have many sharp heads.
Someone I know got a 'S' grade in H1 Chinese when he sat for the exam in J1. He wanted to drop the subject for J2 but his request was denied. -
floppy:
:rotflmao: As what zeemimi says, S doesn't look nice on school stats. So schools will say minimum must score D, or even C for some SAP schools.

yeah, don't put too much emphasis on chinese. pass can already. i think MOE has some minimum mother tongue requirement.
3H2 = max 3 x 20 points = 60 points
GP/PW/H1 = max 10 points each.
Max 90 points. Chinese only comes in if it can improve your rank points by a little bit.
He wrote a lengthy letter to the school explaining that 'S' grade is THE BEST he can achieve (because he is a kantang). He reckoned time wasted on the subject could be better put to use elsewhere (like playing computer games or chasing skirts). Appeal to drop the subject was subsequently accepted and he went on to university with no fuss since his results were reasonably good. He is still a kantang today

I think we all know this is the REAL reason why such requests are being denied :rotflmao:

For this guy, 'S' is really the best he can do and he even threw a party to celebrate 'passing' MTL

Yes, GP and Project Work are considered as H1. To calculate the University Admission Score (UAS), you need:
How about GP, project work consider H1 ?
And must pass to enter Uni still?
ot: actually, i have no idea how was is calculated during my time of : 3 A level subjects + 2 AO subjects - is it also using a grading points system like now A = 40pts etc
3H2 + 1 H1 content subject + GP (H1)/KI(H2) + PW (H1) taken in the same sitting.
The following table shows the mark-range and the ranking points at H2 and H1 level for each grade assigned for students’ performance in each subject. So the maximum UAP would be 20+20+20+10+10+10=90.
Grade\tMark Range\tH2 Ranking Points\tH1 Ranking Points
A\t 70-100\t 20\t 10
B\t 60-69\t 17.5 \t8.75
C\t 55-59\t 15\t 7.5
D\t 50-54\t 12.5\t 6.25
E\t 45-49\t 10\t 5
S\t 40-44\t 5\t 2.5

Whether or not need to pass GP depends on the Uni and faculty you are applying? For example, you won't expect to be eligible for Law if you fail GP....Don't think need to pass GP if going to Science or Engineering Faculty? No idea our time how they calculate 3A + 2 AO, just blur blur enter Uni...

According to floppy's reference to MOE website:
I think you need a full cert to apply for uni, which is 2 H2 passes + a GP pass?
The six Autonomous Universities conduct separate admission exercises as guided by the following broad university admission framework for ‘A‘ Level graduates:
- Minimum application criteria: 2 H2 passes, an attempt at General Paper (or Knowledge and Inquiry) taken at the same sitting, and a sub-pass in a Mother Tongue Language (MTL).
- A minimum MTL proficiency is required (‘S’ grade in H1 MTL or pass in MTL ‘B’ or D7 in GCE ‘O’ Level HMTL). Students who do not obtain a sub-pass for MTL under the current ‘A’ level curriculum can be granted provisional admission but must meet the universities' MTL minimum requirement (by taking MTL classes) sometime before they graduate.
- Grades for the following subjects will be considered for admission: 3 H2 and 1 H1 content-based subjects (at least one of which must be from a contrasting discipline), GP (or KI), PW. Students who score well may also have their MTL grades taken into consideration for admission.
- Additional faculty admission criteria such as interviews or aptitude tests
- Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) performance (considered qualitatively)
So now as long as have taken GP is ok already.... -
Dont be too quick to dismiss MTL as it can be your lifesaver if you screw up your GP, as was the case for my relative. She went out of point for her GP essay (she believed so) and scored a C6, but fortunately her ‘AO’ MTL was an A1 (she did it in her SAP sch) and coupled with 3 decent H2 grades, she managed to limp into FASS.
If you intend to just take 3 H2 subjects in JC (i.e no worst 4th H2 subject to be used for computing your ‘H1’ rank point), you’d better ace that MTL before JC1. -
mommyNg:
Thanks. Interesting that the criteria for MTL is more stringent than GP. You need to have a sub-pass in MTL but can fail GP.

Since you refer to 'AO', I'm going to tell you it's history already :rotflmao:Dont be too quick to dismiss MTL as it can be your lifesaver if you screw up your GP, as was the case for my relative. If you refer to mommyNG points for UAS, 3H2 + 1H1 + GP + PW = 90 points (max).
If you want to include H1 MTL, max UAS is 100 points (the above + H1 MTL). However, 100 points will be rebased to 90 points as the final score for university application.
The university will take whichever score is higher.
Including a high scoring H1 MTL sounds great in principle but to MAKE a difference, you have to royally screwed up the other subjects and ace your H1 MTL (but what’s the point of that?).
e.g. in your relative's results of GP - C, H1 MTL - A, the difference between including or excluding H1 MTL is only 1 to 2 points for her UAS. That's unlikely to make or break her application today.
