NRO has tightened its rules regardind address changing since June 2008. You will need to produce phone/utilities bills that reflect your current address. That is to confirm that you are staying with your mum.

Your registration priority is considered to be 1-2km even if your mum is staying right next to the school.

      Only 1 NRIC is required.

      Hi Chief,

I'm confused on the above. If i've changed my current address to my mom's address (which is nearer to the sch of choice), how come it's still considered 1-2KM priority?

because you don't live there, your mom does. you will also need to get a statutary declaration that the child will be living there.[/quote] 😐 is it so? i believe there are a fair share of parents that took advantage of this by changing their NRIC to their parent's address without declaring that the parent is the caregiver. in such case, if no one else knows/complaints, the parent gets to get away with registering as applicants within 1km.

Yes it's risky, but there are people doing it - if not, why the constant need for some schools to have balloting within a certain distance EVERY YEAR?? Is it possible that they have so many P1 going kids living there EVERY YEAR??? But risk and embarassment aside, i hope that parents who want to do this for the sake of the kids, to bear in mind that they are depriving applicants who genuinely are living just next to the school a seat and that they are lying to get a place for their kids. Talk about morals!

If your current address is an HDB and you are changing your address on the IC to a private address. Do take note as the various government agencies including HDB will automatically be alerted. Their systems are linked. If the officer is on the ball then your case may be flagged up.

i think some of you hv mistaken my intention. eventually, we’ll still be moving to be near my mom when my kid go into P1 so that it’s easier for her to take care of my child. i don’t think that is depriving anyone in the same estate as we’ll surely stay there. and hei, don’t be too serious and talk about morals. we’re all discussing here.

                Hi checkered,

Apologies for confusing you. If you have changed your current address to your mom's address and register your child in your own capacity as parents, then the distance will be as per your address.

If you are registering your mother as guardian of your child, then the distance will be set to 1-2km even if she is staying less than 1km to the school.

I believe the community is simply trying to discourage anyone from using this method to get better chances for getting in good Primary schools. As long as you can prove that you are staying in a specific address, you should not have to worry too much.

If you have good intentions, that is good for you.
I believe there are people who do use addresses of places that they are not residing in.
yes...we are all discussing here, but when it comes to getting a place in popular schools, tempers will fly high (nobody had spared a thought for the little girl who had to be removed from school cos the dad fraudulently use a fake address in the P1 registration) ...you can feel the heat when the 'battle' begins in July each year as parents watch the daily enrolment rate like watching the stocks market 😉.
So yes...if we are using caregiver's address, we have to declare and then we'll be categorised under 1-2km despite living just <1km from the school. And yes, if anyone wants to 'shift in to the parent's place' (on paper only) and use their address as the application address (ie <1km) nobody can stop them (albeit it is not supposed to work this way), they can do it, but i don't think this forum will encourage it...and it'll help that anyone thinking of doing it try not to let anyone else know/post here etc, cos when the stress is on, people will trail and tell.

                  jmho.

                    Hi Chief and jedamum,

thanks for your advice! It’s understood now. Don’t worry, my case is ‘genuine’. In fact, we’re planning to look for a place near my mom’s estate when the market is down in the next few mths.

Checkered, to be considered really 'genuine', you should find ur new place that is within 1km of the school u want BEFORE registration in July, and use THAT address (instead of ur mum's) during registration. Even if you find a place after registration but before your girl starts school, it is still not 'genuine' as u did not use ur real residing address during school registration. JMHO.

I know of a friend who used his dad's address to get within 1km of a popular school and his kid is now in P1. I was just wondering, was his kid instructed to lie to her teachers/friends that she and her daddy/mummy all staying with grandpa??

i heard of parents who bought a flat in condo, kid didnt get into the school next door, they sold and moved away (dunno where). its really a risk.. another idea is to look out for balloting periods to snap a good price?
