Just sharing 2018 A Level cohort’s performance, will need some further contribution/input :

Noticed NUS extra 1.25 points for first choice course extends to some associate overseas colleges.

Thanks Esteema for your wonderful sharing! :rahrah: Wah, you manage to get accurate insider’s information on the % breakdown for individual subjects for many schools! By the way, HCI % distinction for individual subjects are all whole numbers? A few things you may wish to consider to add on:

          1. The row of Mean UAS - not all schools reported the mean, some schools reported the median instead, e.g., NJC and NYJC, and probably should be reflected as such since mean and median are not the same thing.

2.EJC N=529, and their % of 3 H2 A is \"1 in 2\" since you make the distinction between actual numbers vs. descriptive (which is a good thing)

3.For VJC, their % of 3 H2 A, as well as NJC % 3 H2 A and H3 distinctions should also be reflected as \"1 in 2\" to be consistent throughout?

          :thankyou:

This second table contains more info - thanks. Maybe can insert another column for TJC whose Mean UAS is 80.

Can also key in VJC’s H2 Geography % Distinction - 38.1%, while for H2 History - 56.3%. Watch their results youtube at 1:13s.

Every school will have outliners and there a lot of reasons that could affect an individual performance. It’s just a question of how many. It’s not surprising that schools can’t get 100% pass all the time.

By definition, mean of the cohort will have to include everyone. Given that the max score is limited to 90 and majority of the better students bunch up around 80ish, one or two at the other end (which can go as low as 0) is going to screw up your mean massively. I suspect that’s probably why schools prefer median (nicer figure plus more reflective of the students performance).

All things being constant, smaller schools (RV, DHS) should be able to manage their delta better than bigger ones (normal JCs). If seriously want to compare which school is doing better than the other, you will have to normalize or standardize their score... in other words, derive their t-score :rotflmao: otherwise, trying to say A is better than B based on limited info is meaningless.

              TJC is 80ish, not 80. Could be 80.x, 81.x, 82.x...

I agree with floppy. The best is for schools to provide both mean and median to have a better understanding of the distribution. It is not always median > mean (e.g., for A level results) for all schools. It is school-dependent. I will not be surprised to find some schools’ median ~= mean, while for some, median < mean. A few outliers will affect the mean significantly, probably more so for the better performing schools.

All these % serve to satisfy our statistical curiosity, but no matter which school a child is in, they should not see themselves as one of the "numbers". A school with 70% A sounds good, but don’t forget the remaining 30% who didn’t get A. Making conclusions that this school is better than the other school based on a few % differences (some even 0.5 point difference) and limited information is really, as floppy said, quite meaningless.

I got confused with all the mean(average) and median UAS. 😂

Median UAS is the UAS at the 50th percentile and mean is the average UAS.

Based on historical data, is median UAS usually higher than mean UAS?

So RI mean UAS is 84.5.
NYJC median or mean UAS is 85.X?

Then NJC median UAS is 84.4, so what is its mean UAS?
You are right. median is usually higher than mean based on historical data. NYJC median is probably around 85 since they said 50% of their students attained more than 85 UAS. So, at 50 percentile, it stands right at 85.

NJC median UAS is 84.4. Mean should be lower than that, usually 1-3 points lower. these number is quite credible as NYJC cop in recent years is 7 while NJC is 8. So, njc attaining slightly lower result is about right.[/quote]yup more than 50% NYJCians scored 85 RP and above, meaning that the median is definitely higher than 85RP.

NYJC and NJC have the exact same COP for both Science and Arts for year 2017 (2018 A Level Results),

                      Science: 6
                      Arts: 7

So, NJC attaining slightly lower results is not \"about right\"

I think likely the interpretation is from the NYJC P's youtube sharing. He said, \"For Maths and Sciences, more than seven out of ten of you scored distinctions\" (about 45s into the clip). But that sentence is so ambiguous. More than 7 out of 10 of the students scored distinctions for math and sciences, does it mean >70% of students scored at least 1 distinction in Math/Chem/Phy/Bio? H1 or H2? This is very different from saying that 70% of the students scored distinctions in each of the four H2 subjects....

                        That's my interpretation as well.
                        Instead of:
                        H2 Maths: >70%
                        H2 Chemistry: >70%
                        H2 Physics: >70%
                        H2 Biology: >70%

                        I believe it's more likely:
More than 70% has an A in either one or more of Maths / Chem / Phy / Bio

I agree it is not very clear cut as to the P's statement
