Agree with your pt on choosing base on interest.
9 out of 10 score A for lit is not the norm.. the previous year was 7 out of 10, same as other humanities.. econs result is a de-provement from previous years so picking based on interest, aptitude etc is better. I am wowed by the lit performance, well done! -
It is possible that the majority chose econs as econs seems to be the most common contrasting subject for science stream & also the likely subject for Arts stream ie good & below average students all chose econs, hence the wide range of grades.
Lit is likely chosen by those who really have passion & likely confident to do well ie itโs a selected small cohort, hence the high no. of As. -
DD is interested to do H3 biology? Is it difficult to score distinction? Compared to chemistry?

I guess those who choose Lit are the ones who are really interested and have a flair. It's a very self-selected bunch as a lot of students shy away. I don't know how many Sci students choose it, but certainly all the Humanities scholars have to take it!
What type of students would choose Lit? Those very hardcore humans type? Any Sci students chose Lit as their contrasting subject?slmkhoo\" post_id=\"1900181\" time=\"1551263494\" user_id=\"28674:
The no. of students who get distinctions is dependent on how they selected courses (interest, ease, oerceived usefulness, etc). One of my daughters took Econs and another took Geog. Both are pretty content-heavy, so I don't think that's much of a criterion. Econs requires more \"mathematical\" thinking; Geog is more concrete. It really depends on what he likes - get him to read up a bit at the end of the year before choosing.
I have an impression that Lit would be the hardest humans subject to score but was floored when 9 out of 10 Lit students scored As last year, making it the best performing A level H2 subject in the sch. -
Careermum & slmkhoo, thanks for sharing your tots.

Curious to know for those who scored well in A level, whether the school well prepared them or they need tuition outside school?

Thanks ksp\" post_id=\"1901887\" time=\"1552045503\" user_id=\"164449:[quote=\"Thanks ksp\" post_id=1901887 time=1552045503 user_id=164449]
Some had tuition, some didn't. My younger girl didn't have any tuition and did well, and most of her classmates didn't have tuition either. But she was in one of the higher-achieving classes, so maybe the rate of tuition would be higher in other classes. I doubt there is any statistic on this, just hearsay.

It is quite common for many of the gd scorers to hv received tuition as many deem themselves as being weak in certain subjects eg econs or GP for the STEM-inclined ones.

Sometimes, they feel the need for tuition to help them grasp concepts better. Or they may feel tt their sch tutor is unable to help them reach distinction level. They want tt sense of security to get the A grades. -
Thanks slmkhoo and naggo-nitemare for sharing!

Just sharing my opinions, hope it's useful. I do college consulting, so i speak to students who graduate from JC (Pre Uni). From what they share, Geography tends to be more \"Content-heavy\" in terms of the number of items you need to memorize. There are more facts, especially for physical geography, and definitions + terms which you cannot use \"layman terms\" to replace.
Congratulations to the class of 2018 RI(JC).
Looking at the humanities results, Econs distinction is 6 in 10, Geography distinction is 7 in 10.
Does it mean it is easier to get distinction for Geography?
DS is keen to do physics, chemistry and math when he progresses to Year 5.
He has no preference for the contrasting humanities subject.
Should I encourage DS to choose Geography over Econs, or will that be too content heavy?
It seems that PCME is one of the popular subject combi.
May I ask are there students who do PCMG combi?
Economics, on the other hand requires more understanding. The student also has to deal with more graphs, which is probably why some people will say \"the need to have some mathematical background\". But ultimately, I think it depends on his interest. Both require a level of understanding and penning it down on paper to answer essays or case studies. He should read up on the topics covered in both Geography & Econs, see if they fit his \"appetite\". But then, there is no way to fully know whether you are cut out for a subject, unless u seek professional guidance, like extra classes, that sort of thing. Also, it's good to note that Economics tend to have slightly lower distinctions due to the bigger pool of students taking it.
Moving forward, if he wants to pursue Economics in University, it would definitely help if he took it in JC as a base. That being said, it is not a pre-requisite in many universities to have taken the subject in JC, to enrol for that degree or major in University.
