I missed last Sat's open house (pity). My gal's in P5 this yr, dancing ballet RAD grade 5 this yr, hoping the enter SOTA's dance art form studies in a couple of yrs. IB sounds rather challenging & I haven't a clue (am personally more familiar with my secondary/JC route). What's Year 1 like for SOTA students?
I love to help but my info could be outdated. Yr 1,2,3 & 4 parents, we need your help. Thank You. -
dasalo:
No I'm not taking MEP, but I do have grade 5 theory, ABRSM certified. Yes I am, through vocals.
Sorry, if I may ask are you currently taking MEP with your secondary school? Also, I am assuming you are applying to the Music Faculty? -
Just noticed that SOTA now has Junior Studios for all art forms. This appears to replace the previous Junior Academies. Anyone signing their kids for it?

Hello, Im new to this forum. I’m a current P6 and I’m applying to Sota through non-ballet DSA. I do Chinese dance, but have ballet experience. I was just wondering, what do they expect at the introduction to ballet class at TA and what do they look for during the interview? Do they look to see your values or your passion for the art form or anything else? And what types of topics will come out during the writing exercise? Will the topics be related to why you want to go sota or Singapore news or anything? Replies would be greatly appreciated. Sorry, I’m asking quite a lot of questions, but I’m paranoid.

Dance parents, pls help.

I am going for the talent academy under theatre on 28 June. And I was wondering what questions does SOTA usually ask for interview? Also what topics were tested for the previous years for the writing excersise and how am I supposed to write it?I am really bad at interviews as i start to stammer thus i need some advice on it.Were all the students who got accepcted under theatre asked to do the monologue again with a different attitude?I went for the junior academy but was not asked to go for the talent academy does that mean i do not have a good chance to get in?Thanks Can someone please answer because this is the second time i reposted this because no one replied :gloomy:

Hi there!
Be brave, be yourself and have fun.
When it comes to interviews, you can't really predict the questions exactly, but try to be prepared to speak about your practice. Meaning, be prepared to talk about your artistic process (how you choose to act certain things in a certain manner), your ambition, or even your dedication to craft and perfection. No matter the question, it's always better to be sincere than to cop out and give the 'politically correct' or 'star student' response. People always appreciate your honest comments and responses.
Take as much time as you need to form your answer in your head before you speak and be clear. If you do get the jitters before you enter, try doing some jumping jacks or running on the spot. It sort of gets you going and focused (don't over do it, though). Same for the monologues. Speak with conviction and do justice to the talent that you have by believing in it.
Writing wise, I can't really help you there as I haven't actually seen any of the past questions, but try to be clear in your writing. Don't beat around the bush and explain your points as best as you can. If you get stuck, try to think about different perspectives or what others would say about the question/topic! It works if you detach your mind from it a little to get some focused answers.
Finally, since you're paying a whopping sum of $150, what's it worth if you're not having fun? As much as it is a 'test'/interview/admission 'exam', it's still a place and time to absorb the environment and meet new people. And maybe realise a true flame within you for a artistic career in the future - with or without SOTA.
Good Luck! -

Does anyone think that there's a possibility that TA will be resumes this week? I mean, the haze is at about the PSI 70 mark, and they did say it was canceled until further notice...

Bentan's comments rely on too much hearsay and sweeping statements.
omigosh puh lease! you are being quite stereotypical. arts students are not bad in their academics! if sota students are there, then they are aware they need help or they wld not need to go to for tuition am i not correct? Our curriculum ends at 5.15. The teachers give us less hw and everything they are very understanding however, you must admit that if your child's curriculum ends at 5.15 almost everyday but friday for some years, wld you as a parent want to place extra stress on your child by giving him or her additional academic tuition? I know the answer. NO. I have friends who're scoring as much as 44/45 in my math class. i'll have you know that arts students, or sota students, DO NOT HAVE BAD MINDS. We choose to go to sota because we respect the arts; we want to develop our passion. So mind you, don't go around insulting arts students like that because you might just end up ending embarrassing yourself in front of others. And i wld just like to express what i feel strongly about, sorry if you are offended.Bentan:
Several SOTA students came to http://singapore.math-chinese-tutor.com for Math tuition.
Being Arts-inclined, many SOTA students are weak in Math, since primary school. I was told that many of them scored B for Math in PSLE.
SOTA program is IB and students therefore do not need to take O-Level. Many SOTA students therefor do not really know how bad their Math is. Personally I think that their Math is really bad. I am encouraging all my students to sit for O-level as private candidate so as to benchmark their standard against the Express students.
P.S A lot of my friends scored A* for math and i myself have scored an A.

Maybe his teaching method is poor that is why his students are not doing well. -
Anyone has any idea when will the Talent Academy results be out?

Hi,
Can anyone share what’s the prescribed piece for piano audition this year? Many thanks in advance. -

My DD went for the Junior Academy in March 2013. If it is similar to JA, then definitely worth signing up your child for it if he or she is keen to audition for SOTA next year. It gives the child first hand experience in SOTA and there is certificate at the end of the course.
