        @ngl,

My son this year will be 16, on national day 🙂

Yup, he is rebellious in some ways, obedient in some ways.

Do you know our Singaporean comedian ah gua Kumar ? He told current parents to be friend with their children first, so that children will recipocrate with parents 🙂
        'AH GUA'? Not very polite.

That’s what he calls himself on stage 😂

Let me tell you something, Bastard. Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armour, and it can never be used to hurt you.

              We?
You and floppy watched him in Boom Boom Room before? :scratchhead:

Kumar calling himself that onstage as part of his showmanship isn't the same as the audience calling him that casually or for that matter, anyone else calling someone else that because that someone else happens to cross-dress for work, right?

For the record, he is not a transvestite. He is a homosexual.

Self-deprecating jokes are entitled to the self only. Fact is he didn't like the derogatory term when he first started out, but he put up with it.

              https://postimg.cc/mzQys27w

Hopefully parents do not use the Hokkien term flippantly in front of kids as they may think it's funny and start calling their effeminate or weaker classmates or other campmates that.

Same for ah nehs, ah bu neh neh, keh lengs, ah tiongs that I sometimes see on some forums. These sorts of PG/ Merdeka-Gen terms are no longer correct in today's educated world.

                  Avoiding the controversy about terminology!

I don't agree that parents should be friends first; they should be PARENTS first. Of course, different people have different ideas what it means to be friends, and what it means to be parents. Some friends are \"fair-weather\" or \"users\", while some parents may be authoritarian or distant.

For my husband and I, we are on very good terms with our nearly-independent adult girls. But both had to learn when they were young that we parents had the final say, and I think they appreciated that we were sometimes strict and said \"no\" because we felt that was best for them at those times. At other times, we always tried to be approachable and treat them like individuals, giving them as much freedom and independence in decision-making as we felt they were capable of. We were very strict when they were young, but have eased off as they grew up. What I think we have is mutual care and respect. I hope that continues as they get stronger and more able, while we get weaker and less able.

I also disagree with what Kumar said.

When DS was in sec 1, his schools conducted a talk for us and told us that when the kids are young, we shoud be their teacher. When they are teenagers, we should act like a coach. When they are adults, then we treat them as friends.

I shudder when I think of Amos Yee. I think the mother didn’t discipline him when he was young. I can understand his previous problems but now he defends paedophiles and his mother still defends him???
