Is this Ri vs NUSH discussion necessary at all? Let's just celebrate the students' and schools' achievements without this kind of comparison. If the intention is to help NUSH to improve their grooming of students, then this is the wrong thread. If the intention is to congratulate RI on it's achievements, then reference to NUSH is unnecessary.
Totally agree. I hardly come to this forum. But when you see sweeping statements, you just feel that you need to say something.

Btw like most of you here, I was RI parent.

When I shared news of the IMO team selection, my intention was not to compare with other schools. I simply find it amazing that the RI conveyor belt continues to churn out top MO talents to replace those who preceded them. I believe the system is battle-proven and the talent pool is there to be nurtured.

Just like we won’t compare RI’s sports achievements with the Sports School, it’s also incompatible to compare it’s Olympiad achievements with NUSH, a niche school. Mainstream schools and specialised schools are like apples and oranges. They cater to different student segments, have dissimilar pedagogies, and school life should have vastly different focal points too. There is simply no basis for comparison.

I was told that for this year, the current SIMO senior team was coached by NUSH teachers, while the national team by ex-Rafflesians. The senior team forms the core for the national team in latter years, while the national team trains for competitions such as IMO.

At the end of the day, both schools serve to prepare local math talents for Team Singapore. That’s the common goal.

Hi, for jc1, does the myct fall on May and FTE fall on Oct.
All exams in RJC are held after holidays except there is no exam after March holiday for JC1 and no exam after December holiday.

So, MYCT for JC1 is after June holiday and promo exam is after September holiday.

One exception though... GP exams are usually held right before the holiday starts.

Yes, my daughter used to complain that the JC test/exam timetable was designed to spoil her vacations!

I believe it is a strategy employed by RI, Hwa Chong and some other schools to force their students to use the holidays to study. There are other JCs that hold their exams before holiday though. But if the exams are held before holiday, how many % of the students will use (part of) their holiday time to study?

hi ngl2010, thank you on the infor.
May I know does final assembly fall on same day as RI Sec. For nov/dec sch holidays, does student need to go back sch. Is 15days overseas holiday feasible then. Thank you.
DS can’t remember the final assembly day but he said in 2018 PW oral presentation ended around 2nd week of November. Then there were classes until 1 week before end of November 2018. After that, depending on the CCA, they may still need to go to school. It is better to check with your son on his CCA activities in November/December.

Maybe I should share it here. Last week, an admission officer from Yale University visited RI and gave a talk to Y6 students. The officer said Yale gives out awards to graduating seniors each year. Four of these awards are for excellent academic achievements in the fields of humanity, social science, natural science and overall academic excellency. Last year, of the four recipients of the outstanding academic awards, three are students from Singapore, and all of the three are Rafflesians.

I was incredulous when my daughter told me so. Yale is a university that attracts most talented students from all over the world. How could a few students from a single institution of far away Singapore dominate the scene? I went ahead to search Yale's website and found out that it was true:

                  https://news.yale.edu/2018/05/20/yale-college-honors-outstanding-students

I was a bit awestruck thinking the significance of this piece of news. Nowadays, schools are very cautious in revealing A level or universities admission results. If it's not for this visiting admission officer, we would not have chance to know and appreciate the incredible intellectual prowess of these Rafflesians. And broadly speaking, this is a testimonial to the success of Singapore's education system.

Hi parents! I graduated RI Y1-6 IP last year ('2018 batch), currently serving in NS. Was wondering if there was anyone looking for a tutor on weekends. I still have my notes and assignments from Y1-6 and am keen on sharing my experiences, tips and advice from my 6 year journey. Drop me a message if you’re interested!

Your boy can still wear white shorts in Y3 and Y4. Only Y5 and Y6 can't wear white shorts.
