Hi mommys and daddys, would you recommend signing your child up with a school or a private piano teacher? For my ds, we went with a music school for his piano and he is now grade 5… but for theory, we decided to choose a private teacher who had an accelerated program and was able to help him accomplish grade 1 to 5 in 6 months. Now I’m wondering if I should pull my son out of the music school and look for a private piano teacher… would it be faster? any feedback is appreciated

Private teachers are of course not bound by rules and regulations of a music school and able to skip mandatory exams specified by the school. So theoretically, as long your son is hardworking, he would be able to progress faster.

But a factor you need to consider is that your son is already grade 5 and it is significantly much harder to correct any technical problems or bad habits at this point, so changing teacher may not necessarily result in better progress or playing.

Me and my wife are conducting another round of student enrollment.

I am opening up regular slots at our Lower Delta studio on Wednesday 3-7 pm. My other weekdays and weekend regular slots are currently full but feel free to contact me if you want to be put in the waiting list.

I am also looking to fill the following off-peak slots ($50 only per hour!):
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday mornings
- Thursday (@Serangoon), Friday 8 pm.

What kind of students will be suitable to learn with me?
- Beginner young children who want to learn at very fast pace (average progress of 2 grades per year). Primary focus will be on festivals, competitions, and concerts; exams optional. Yes, I prefer to take in fresh beginners from 4-6 years old; maximum one year of prior lessons with other schools or teachers
- Serious adults and teenagers who want to complete Grade 8 and Diplomas ASAP, especially for those considering to enter teaching profession or just want to help their kids learn better. Beginner or lower grades are welcome too.
- Teachers who want to pursue Teaching or Performance Diplomas (especially ABRSM ones)

My wife is looking to fill most of her slots on Saturday and Sunday at our Lower Delta studio. She can also travel to nearby area for home visits. She is more of a generalist teacher and teaches at more standard pace, though like me she also encourages students to perform more often rather than taking exams.
