Ah Gong says, \"all schools are good schools\". The term \"better\" is subjective. One man's meat is another man's poison. Since both schools are near your place, you could explore the school's surrounding and visit their open house, if any, to find out which is more suitable for your child.

FYI, Bukit View will be shifting to a holding site from January 2020 to December 2021 while the school is undergoing upgrading. While the address for calculating distance priority is based on the school's current address, the actual physical location will be in Jurong East for the next 2 years. Some parents may not like the disruption and inconvenience for 2 years.

Hi everyone


Newbie to the website. Wonderful insight on all groups.

Have some questions for below schools for my son’s P1 registration for 2020 intake.
We are PR and will apply in phase 2C, I did not do any PV, and we have 3 schools in less than 1km radius:

1) St Andrews - they have said if no PV and PR then chances very low. Is this true?
2) Bendemeer Primary - No open house to judge school culture. Any advice on reputation / perception of school?
3) Hong Wen - same as St Andrews have said if no PV and PR and not chinese then no point in applying. Is this correct?

In the 1 - 2km radius we have below school:
Cedar Primary - they have no open house so hard to judge school culture. Any advice on reputation / perception of school?

More than 2km radius option:
Tanjong Katong Primary - going back to main campus in 2020. Open house revealed single session and reduced number of seats. Any advice on whether worth trying for this in 2C given we dont stay close by? We will be happy to move once my son is in though.

Any advice / tips are much appreciated.

YES it’s true

Cedar Primary and Tanjong Katong are also fairly reasonable schools. But you are at very high risk of not getting a chance to ballot at all, given your distance. Just go for the safe option of Bendemeer.

For PR, the rule of the thumb is to avoid applying to any schools in Phase 2C that involves balloting. The 'branding' of the school should not be of utmost importance.

Balloting is not worth the risk. If you are not successful at the ballot, you will find limited prospects and options at Phase 2CS. In every phases, SC, regardless of distance, has absolute priority over PR and you can be sure that Phase 2CS will see an intense 'fight' over the remaining 'popular' schools.

To help you in your search, your best friend is gonna be this url: https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/article/singapore-primary-1-registration-school-balloting-history/. While historical data has no bearing on future registration, it often serves as a good guide on the demand / behaviour of the mob (aka applicants).

Apart from Bendemeer, Farrer Park is another you can consider. While historically, Cedar Primary should be ok for PR in Phase 2C, you may have to monitor it closely during the actual registration as the demand curve may have shifted due to a number of new projects / flats being built as part of the Bidadari project.

I have been studying balloting history since I joined this forum and yes you are right about not taking a chance with a school that traditionally goes to the ballot.
So indeed the decision weighs heavy.

Yup. I don’t feel it needs to weigh heavily on you. Every school in Singapore is good enough and will provide a good education for your boys. Bendemeer is certainly good enough. It’s not a crap or lousy school at all.
