At this late hour, I’m not sure any Centre that is good would be able to do miracles for yr P6 son in a short span of time. Only 3 mths to Sept’s Prelim. It also depends a lot on other factors such as teacher/student Chemistry, how determined yr son will be, s’times aptitude too besides determination & hardwork, etc.

Sorry to pull in some reality. You might also need to watch the level of stress yr child is thrown with in school & at home (or other concurrent tuition).

If you really think it’ll help (but be prepared not to mismatch expectations of good tutors), try Academia at Sin Ming Plaza 2. Heard they’re running a special compo focus holiday Programme this June.

If you happen to stay in the West, you may want to try my dd1 ex tutor Miss Goh. An experienced and dedicated tutor who is strong in teaching exam techniques and content. For further information, you may contact her at 93989072. Not very sure if she still has slot available though.

Hi, I'm wondering if there are any composition marking services (pegged to Singapore PSLE style of marking), where a student writes a compo at home and emails it to a teacher who will grade and mark the compo in detail, with guidance on how can he/she improve in some areas, what and how to elaborate, adding in good phrases/sentences to the compo where necessary, with the intent to allow the student to read, compare, analyse and improve.

Hi, my gal loves reading, has no problem with spelling (although may have some hiccups for complicated and tricky words, overall is ok), but doesn’t like to write compositions as she doesn’t know how to start, make transitions and end the story.


I have taught her techniques (eg, Start with a speech, an action, describe the surroundings and also 5W/1H), showed her examples, but she is not too keen.

Anyone had similar experiences? How did you overcome this?
To me, story writing should come naturally when one reads to get ideas from story books and also draw from daily life experiences/cartoons/movies etc.

I am not an expert and neither did I my compositions get any award when I was in school, but at least I write decently and has no problem like what I have described above.

Any tip appreciated !

Hi marmalade. U don’t mention how old your gal is.

My DS is in P3. He is very similar to your gal. I have tried all I can to impart my knowledge of the techniques to him - including the basics, plus the quality tips that some compo schools provide (I subscribe to their mailing lists).

He *still* is not keen, does not like to plan the story beforehand, and writes too few words. But like your gal, his grammar and vocab are perfectly fine. IMO, at P3 I’m not too fussed about it yet. His school doesn’t test compo writing as a major component of exams (yet!) I can see that he creates his storyline from what he reads and daily life/experiences etc.

Maybe our kids find writing about those boring old topics really staid and uninteresting. But when the rubber meets the road, when they’re really forced to squeeze out a compo, I really do think they will rise up and meet the challenge. It’s all there at the back of their mind in their foundation.

P/s: I let him exercise his creative brain by letting him have free reign over the comics that he draws (yes he has series after series and with well-developed characters). His new sports coach also tasked him with keeping a journal of all his lessons. That has helped a lot with a writing routine. Maybe you can let her keep a journal or diary too (this helps with getting the words out, in a fun way)

She said she will only write when she wants to and they are all her secrets. :roll:
I am just afraid that she will not be able to cope as she gets to upper primary.

Hi marmalade, this is one idea that my son’s P2 teacher suggested. I have yet to try it out with my son...

Parent and child can write a short story/compo together. Eg after a day out at Sentosa or a special occasion like birthday party etc. Sit down and take turns to write alternate lines. Parent start with the first sentence, child continues with the 2nd sentence, another child (if you have one) continues with the 3rd sentence...back to parent, and so on. It becomes a fun family activity and you recall your memories together. In the process, you may even discover that other people have different perspectives/recollection of the same event! You can take the chance to mention “point of view”, discuss whether using passive or active tense is more appropriate at which points of the story etc.
