hi, try to write together with him... the more you write - the more you learn I guess
Agreed. You may start with getting your child to form a sentence based of anything he sees in his daily life.

Good question! I also been through this stage trying to teach my children how to write a good essay. However, I am not a English teacher and got limits to teaching correct English grammar. So what I do is I sent him to writing classes instead. My child actually did improve in writing. He have to write lots of essay to get better at it. Hope this helps!

Agree! Same in my case. It’s too hard to teach compo writing so I rather leave it to the experts. It takes the stress off the relationship with the kids. Sometimes when I do give them my take on their stories, they still feel I am judging them so nowadays I don’t even comment much. Fortunately they have been doing well.

Creative writing or fiction writing is a good idea, gives more creativity to your child

Writing on the whole can be a complex process that involves the following:

                    - Strong command of the English language

                    - A wide range of vocabulary

                    - Cognitive ability to narrate for fiction writing

                    - Cognitive ability to discuss and argue for discursive and argumentative writing

                    - Ability to organise points into comprehensive paragraphs that connect and flow from one paragraph to another

                    - Ability to write impactful intros and conclusions

                    - For fiction writing, if your child is at the secondary level, a strong familiarity with literary devices such as the use of allusion, metaphor and simile are required.

Without knowing the child’s level of education, and without looking at the child’s essay, it is difficult to advise on which aspects of writing child requires guidance on.

I would advise that you encourage your child to read consistently and regularly, and to write often. Provide your child with appropriate academic guidance in this area, probably through the help of a tutor. Over time, your child would develop his or her own writing style and find a literary genre that he or she is receptive to.
