ACSP and ACSJ at P1 and P2 are almost the same if you asking about homework. Because all the works given can be completed in the class unless the child cannot completes them. Both my DCs are in the GEP, transferred from ACSJ. At P4 also "no homework" because can be completed in the class or in the school compound. My DSs simply refused to bring back homework to complete. They just want to read and play sports after school.


At P5, I start to see homework being brought back to home. Coz of the sheer amount of homework is crazy.

Do u think the much higher homework load is due to them being in higher primary or because your kids are in GEP?
I like the idea of completing homework in school and having time to read, do sports and pick up interests outside classroom. Lower primary school life should be learn and fun afterall.

May I ask, before P4 into GEP, do your kids find school work being easy? How do you sustain your kids’ interest to learn in the classroom?

DS had always been in J and the teachers hv a rule amongst themselves. Each day they’ll ensure hmwk brot home does not require for than half hr to be completed. If the child needs more time than that’s a good opportunity to review & revise the foundational concepts.


There were times when DS hv CCAs and in btwn waiting time completes hmwk in sch. He has no prob with catching up as we’ve trained him to keep up on topics in all subjects. Personally, my feel is there’s no prob for hmwk to be Brot home as long as their time is paid in class concentrating & participating constructively & actively.

DS always hv time for R&R for swimming, biking, tennis or basketball. After dinner, always time enuf to prepare for 听写, 作文 practice, spelling, etc. He’s an avid reader and hv time to read all his favorite titles fr different libraries. No hp distraction except for 15 min on Sat & Sundays.

If u are looking for a Christian school that is academically rigorous (and if u are open to moving house) I would suggest St Hilda’s Primary (non-SAP) or Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary (SAP). These are the ones that place strong emphasis on cerebral achievements.


I still remember during the National School Games Chess Championships, St Hilda’s sent a tour bus packed with their Chess CCA kids and teachers. Before the tournament started, all of them sat down with their own portable Chess sets in the canteen & started practising as warm up. They are that serious.

Regardless which school u choose, u would need to come up with some routine for after school. Fix a study routine for your child (get assessment books if u need to, don’t rely on school homework only!) Make sure the caregiver can supervise the work effectively (not just cave and allow iPad games for hours on end). Otherwise, maybe consider paying for student care, they would train the routine into your child for you.

I guess I am now less \"worried\" over the \"no homework\" after hearing what you all have shared. I guess I have to establish a routine to manage the \"free-time\".

Zac's Mum, I am not looking at the very rigourous type of schools. Some rigour is good enough to stretch the kid. I dare not take my chance on the popular schools in Phase 2C

For student care, my friend told me her son's school (within the vicinity) does not allow student care teachers to coach homework! Reason being, these teachers may not teach the way school has wanted.
There are people who also told me that they prefer not to send lower Pri kids to student care centres because they may pick up bad habits from the older kids. There is really no best of both worlds! Unless parents are at home to supervise, coach, I do not see how the home caregivers can take the role of disciplinarian and coach. But at least now I learnt that we can always give DS assessment books to do!

No. More homework in P5 not amounting to GEP. I am still keeping in contact with parents (then) when DS1 was out of ACSJ. Likewise P5 at ACSJ, also have alot of homework. I believe at P5, the school step up because P5 the workload and component testing are the same as P6.


What sort of school are you comparing with ACS? I can't comment much with other schools but I do know NYPS because I am an alumni at NYPS. Comparing between ACS and NYPS homework.... . Pointless to compare as well. Boys and Girls learn thing differently. Each has its own pros and cons.

How do I sustain interest to learn in class? Boys .....what do you think? They just want to complete fast fast and then go and play or do the things they want. Nah. I don't do much except to remind them. Work with the teachers. Check with the teachers whether do your child has classroom management issue. Resolve this issue (if any) and everything will fall into place.

pros and cons on after school care. It depends on the environment. For me, I don’t like the ideas of having student care teachers to coach the homework especially if the student care teachers are not inline with the school teachers. Hence result in different teaching methodology and ended up confusion. Poor child.


Maybe I am old school. I still very much think that it is parents job to do the coaching at home. But in today time, it may not be so easy for some family. I prefer to take charge of my child’s learning phase. Knowing the child weakness and strength goes a long way. So sometime no choice, mummies have to wear different hats. Sacrifice a lot of me-time for the child.
