With teenage kids, there’s no need to engage land tour agency.

Japan is a very efficient country & they’ve very clear pamphlets at every JR & local train stations. Japanese major cities are better sightseeing via local & JR trains btwn cities. You can try drop by JR Rail counters at Tanjong Pagar or Ngee Ann Kongsi bldg to get done advice & pre-purchase yr JR Tickets & tickets for other tourist spots. JR & Japan travel apps can be downloaded & help u with directions when u’re on ground. That’s how we started traveling as my kids get into their teens & they had so much fun topographing our way around.

With internet it’s so easy to google for hotels, top tourist spots or even use google earth to map the order of places u shld visit to maximize yr time there based on the distance btwn places or yr accommodation. At every station, if u need head-start instructions, you can always asks station staff to point you so as to reduce time locating yr destinations. Most major stations hv underground shopping & restaurants. If u’re hungry late in the night, they’ve those 24-hour Family Mart, Lawson’s, etc. Very decent food & beverage u’ll never go hungry.

Thanks for the advice, Esteema. wld love to do the planning w kids if time allows, but for now, both gg thru major exams, and i'm tied down to coaching the younger, so easier way to go wld b thru agy that best fits our preferred itinerary for a start. nxt yr wld b a beta time for such planning 🙂

Ha, ha! We did our first topo in the year my DS had PSLE. Ustand the time constraints.

We started in Osaka, visited Kyoto, Nagoya, Kinosaki, Kobe, Hiroshima, Tokyo & Hakone where we met a nice Japanese family, who hosted our Cherry blossom trip this year!

I just list where we wish to sightsee & then book Hotels. That year we spent a whole month in Japan right after DS’s PSLE. So, imagine we were on ‘blind’ sightseeing but worked out well coz the kids had fun figuring as we go which train takes us to destination. We left the very next day after last PSLE paper!

Anyway, you’ll googling sightseeing spots & listing them wldn’t take more than an hour to give yourself an idea what is possible. Always try to book yr hotels near train stations & u’ll save lots of time. Do bear in mind hotels in the cities are usually very tight for space, so yr family of four will hv to book at least 2 rooms for 4 pax.

Wondering if anyone tried staying in a capsule hotel?
I can’t decide if it will be an interesting experience for my kids just for one night or if it is not worth a potentially sleepless night.
We tried capsule hotel at Narita airport on our last night in Tokyo for the sake of experiencing it. Anyway, our flight to Singapore was in the morning so capsule hotel at the airport makes sense.

The capsule hotel is clean, modern and orderly. There was no drunken workers. Most (or all) are tourists. There are no baths, only individual standing showers with doors. Male and female are in separate sections. You don’t see other gender other than in the check-in/out lobby.

@ ngl2010 Amazing experience you hv there with capsule hotel! Think it works coz at the airport, there’ll be less chances of shady character & wld generally be safer. Good that M/F segregated. If ever I hv time, might just try it.

Is there any place/area that we can venture out of Osaka as a day trip, besides Kyoto, Kobe and Nara, within 30mins-1hour by train?

For us, Kyoto is highly recommended. Nara is subjective. Unless you hv very young kids, they might enjoy. But be very careful with deers who might ‘bite’ for their food & scare yr kids. I didn’t enjoy the visit coz nothing much to ‘sightsee’ with deers. We enjoy more of their atmosphere, food and culture. Try their kabuki & theatre. Kobe not much except I managed to get nice soap fr the Garden (can’t rmbr name off-hand).
