Thanks all for the HZ etc info!

One more thing, if you don't mind overpaying... err, I mean 'pamper' yourself, and want to eat at somewhere famous (and where all the famous people have eaten), give 楼外楼 in Hangzhou a try. Build in 1848, 楼外楼 is a 百年老字号 and serves all the famous dishes like 西湖醋鱼, 叫化童鸡, 东坡肉, etc.

Disclaimer: I've never eaten there before, because I'm a cheapo when it comes to food.

Thanks, but probably not. We're not foodies, and won't go out of our way to find (or pay for) special food places!

I hope you are not staying at Holiday Inn Hangzhou…the breakfast was superb but the rooms were old and kinda run down.
slmkhoo: 3 days/ But what is your time of arrival and departure from Hangzhou. You may have very little time left in Hangzhou, hence Suzhou should not be included. Hangzhou to Suzhou by HSR is 1-1.5h.
Suzhou has several Tang->Qing gardens (all UNESCO WHS). It's like Kyoto, but maybe restoration-wise isn't as good as Kyoto because a lot of gardens were damaged during the Cultural Revolution, so the conservationists need a longer time and more funds to restore them to their former glory.
...

Thanks for the info! We have 3 full days - arriving on a Fri night, leaving Mon night. We'll see what we can fit into the time. We're not very \"good\" tourists in that we don't necessarily want to see everything, and usually not in a great detail. We may prefer to see less in HZ and just a few things in SZ since we are in the vicinity. Might book a day trip to SZ rather than DIY. What about some of those \"water towns\"? Are they worth the travel and time?
...

Given that you have 3 days, it is *possible* to cover 2 out of the 3: Hangzhou, Suzhou and Wuzhen. It would be crazy to do all 3. Of the 3, I would skip Suzhou if I have to. Hangzhou is much nicer (IMHO, feel free to disagree) and Wuzhen is unique.

It's easy to get around Hangzhou to the touristy spots. As mummyv suggests, take the bus - they are priced VERY reasonably and get you to places comfortably. As a rule of thumb, look out for the ‘Y’ buses; ‘Y’ buses are tourist buses. The 2 main buses that you will probably need are Y1 and Y2. You can refer to https://www.chinadiscovery.com/zhejiang/hangzhou/public-buses.html. Things to see: Lingyin Temple, West Lake*, Yuefei Temple. You can also choose to walk or cycle around the West Lake (about 13km without using the two causeways as shortcuts 😂 ). Alternatively, walk the two causeways circuit: Su Causeway - under 3 km, and Bai Causeway - slightly more than 1km.

* There are 10 classic sights in West Lake from since Southern Song period (1127–1279). You will not be able to see them all at once due to seasonality:
1. 苏堤春晓
2. 曲院风荷
3. 平湖秋月
4. 断桥残雪
5. 花港观鱼
6. 柳浪闻莺
7. 三潭印月
8. 双峰插云
9. 雷峰夕照
10. 南屏晚钟

If you have time in the evening, you may want to take a look at this show: Impression West Lake (Enduring Memories of Hangzhou) (最忆是杭州). Directed by Zhang Yimou, this show is staged entirely upon the lake itself. This version was staged for the 2016 G20 summit and opened to the public in 2017. You can https://www.klook.com/en-SG/activity/5954-impression-west-lake-ticket-hangzhou/?aid=1018 (~S$68).

For day tour to Wuzhen from Hangzhou, you can take a https://www.klook.com/en-SG/activity/1378-wuzhen-water-village-day-tour-hangzhou/?aid=1018 (~S$88 per pax).
@floppy: I wonder if you've been to Hangzhou and Suzhou before. Are you just rattling off klook or google? :rotflmao: So many places how to cover in less than 7 days?! I had to break up into 2 trips to cover most of the must-sees. 😓

楼外楼- besides the famous dishes, you can’t beat the ambience and the view of the lake!

:hi5: Love this place too!! Love the 龙井虾仁、东坡肉.

As for makan in Suzhou, I went to 松鹤楼 (another historic F&B). Suzhou has another type of braised pork belly called 樱桃肉。 Emperor Qianlong loved 松鼠桂鱼 (like soon hock drizzled with vinegar-sugar sauce), so you must try this dish. Another dish I always order at 苏浙 restaurants is 淮扬狮子头、蟹粉豆腐。My mom can make very authentic Jiangnan style 狮子头 as she learnt that from her mom.

@slmkhoo: I think in Suzhou, you can take the Blue Line 4 to the last station where Tongli water town is. It's only 30min I read on google. I've never been to Tongli myself.

Mummyv has recommended to Panmen and Grand Canal. I can hardly remember anything about Panmen 😞 Actually, a Grand Canal cruise and a visit to old town/street Shantang in Suzhou is good enough if you want to have a glimpse of Jiangnan water canals.
[b]No need to specially travel to a watertown that far away if time does not permit. [.b] Alight at Shantang Street subway and you'll enjoy a day at this quaint place...
https://www.shidaiyoukan.com/lh/dl/1427.html

The Grand Canal was one of the Jiangnan routes taken by Emperor Qianlong.

I had to break up into 2 trips to cover most of the must-sees. 😓
Understanding the profile of the traveler is important, not everyone needs or wants to cover / touch / see / spit on everything (spitting is probably just for Yuefei Temple). While you may be the kind that if it appears on Instagram somewhere, you must see it or try it, regardless of the time and length of queue, there are others who would spend 6 days out of 7 days in the hotel room and the last day on a day tour, and call that a great holiday having seen what they need to see. slmkhoo already said her travelling party is “not very \"good\" tourists in that we don't necessarily want to see everything, and usually not in a great detail.” Hence, I won't be surprised that there will be several places listed that she probably isn't interested in, and which I assume, she can eliminate on her own.

In theory, it is possible to cover 3 places in 3 days but not one that I would recommend:
Day 1 - Hangzhou day tour.
Day 2 - Suzhou day tour.
Day 3 - Wuzhen day tour.
Beside money, just need lots of stamina 😆

P/s: In case you are thinking that such tours or such travelers don't exist... see https://www.chanbrothers.com/flexi/itinerary/5-days-shanghai-suzhou-hangzhou-nanxun-watertown-made-easy-4-to-go--meszh-gv04. Take away SHA the gateway, and you are effectively left with 3 full days to tour Suzhou, water town and Hangzhou 😂 I figure it has been a long time since you went on a packaged tour :rotflmao:

We will probably do SZ on the middle day, and hopefully get a one-day tour to save time and energy. The other 2 days we will probably take it easy and see things in HZ at a nice slow pace! Don't like to rush around too much.

So, it's going to be Hangzhou and Suzhou. Is that your final answer? 😂
2 out of 3 is ok. 3 out of 3 (though doable) is crazy

One thing .zeit is right about, there are too many things to cover in those 2 cities. You will have to prioritize and determine what are your must-do / must-see.

That's the current idea, but it's too early to make firm plans. Anyway, with only 2 of us going, we can be flexible and play it by ear. Yes, there are too many things to cover, but that's true for most places. We are OK with just seeing a few.

Err... there are people I know who do 3+ days trip to Europe (leave in the wee hours of Friday, come back in the early morning of Sunday). They don't mind doing it because:
1. Singapore is boring
2. Tickets are pretty cheap (ID ticket)
3. Hotels are affordable (industry rate)
4. They just need that latest season handbag
