Will you all take care of your grandkids or go retired at a fishing village?
My son asked if I can take care of his future kids next time. Lol. He knows I quit my job to take care of them and doesn't think next time wives will be contented with giving up their careers and staying home for the kids.

I guess am ok to help on a need-to basis but unlikely I will quit my job to babysit their kids. A lot will also be influenced by the personality, habits and values of their spouse. If the difference is too great, better not. Spoils the relationship and makes things difficult for them.

There are infant care facilities and I observed it is beneficial for kids.

Working from home is also increasingly an option.

That time I was working. I was thinking, theoretically, my work years are longer than my fil and wondered why they did not offer to quit the job to do childcare for me.
Now they are self sufficient and do not rely on us for retirement. But on the other side, single income on my side means hb does not have the luxury to be a Mexican fisherman now or another 15 years minimum.

Child and student care OK, but infant stage I feel still need personal care.

Availability of reliable childcare is real in affecting couples decision to have more than one kid. Thinking that our decision to agree or not (to assist in child care) may affect their decision, makes me feel uncomfortable. Maybe I should look into becoming an infant educarer/childcare aide and recommend my kids to send my grandkids to where I work. 😂

The conclusion I have after reading the last couple of days’ posts is that everyone has different aspirations for their retirement years. Which is good since we don’t want everyone doing the same thing! Hopefully there won’t be too much competition for the 3-room flat I finally decide to buy in 13 years time!

As for looking after grandchildren, my kids know that looking after them exhausted the little "babycare" desires I ever had, so they’re on their own! I hope their experience growing up will have persuaded them that it is worthwhile to either take a step back in career or even put it on hold for a while when their kids are very young (assuming they have any, which is another question). I was just talking to one of my girls last night, who said that working life seems so long - more than 40 years for those graduating soon. So there is plenty of time to work; no harm taking a few years to "go slow" when kids are young.

One point to note when selecting retirement house. Near or easily accessible to hospital will be good. More medical appointments when older.

Preferably sheltered access to coffee shops, clinics and other amenities.

Amk is one of my preferred area. Grew up in that area. Even now, I still visit the GP whose clinic is in amk.

i thought Teens din even think of getting married yet.

If i am already near 60 - i should not be working FUll time or not working for $ already
i think i will help to look look see see the grand kids , not staying with them.

it is really v difficult to manage for ftwm to work and look after babies, todds, pri sch ,even sec Teen - always good to have a senior grandparent at home to show love n care to young/schooling children. Adult parents will feel more assured at work too .

Haha, for the sum of $1.5mil how many zeros are there? At least 6 zeros, not enough zeros ah? 😄

Current lifestyles of my kids I estimated if have $2500/month, they will be reasonably comfortable in their retirement years. My girl’s $1.5 mil probably could yield her $5,000/month of recurring retirement income in 18 years time (about $3,000 present value at 3% inflation).

The challenge is when to know or realise that "enough is enough".

It was over dinner casual conversation. That boy said he doesn't see why people slog to pursue materials gain and why the society and cost of living is causing people to have to work and having lower quality of life despite the better standards of living. He just want a decent 4room hdb, a stay at home wife (which I think not so possible or realistic) and decent living. I am thinking is it our semi Mexican village life is causing him to lack the ambition/drive because when one lives in a peaceful fishing village, he won't know the excitement of city living. We live simply, travel only to neighbouring countries etc and he is comfortable with such standards. Is it complacency? Or life realisation?
