my dh says he would like to spend more time with his children before they ‘dont want’ him…kids growing too fast that I sometimes feel I couldn’t seem to catch up even tho I m with them 24/7. soon, after psle, I would really like to spend time with them properly.

From my pov, the truth is, on hindsight, every one is wiser.
My boy said one doesn't need 270 to enter top sec school in Singapore. Why the spending on tuition and endless exam papers drills then? But does one knows if he can hit the cut off point prior to release of results?
Then others can say why must die die go that school? No need to study, all schools are good schools. Be contented. The balance of staying competitive or being complacent - one will know his her decision is correct or wrong when they reach that destination, no?

I was the one who told my daughter that it wasn't necessary to work herself to the bone for an extra few points at PSLE! And I was the one who told her, not that all schools were equally good, but that even if she missed the top few schools, the schools in the next rung were not too different, and it was up to her what she made of where she ended up.

I don't see the that not being competitive is the same as not studying and being complacent. I prefer my kids to focus on doing their best, without caring whether they are better than the rest of their cohort or not. I would certainly come down hard if any child of mine told me \"no need to study\" because they had a safety net, but I tell them that I am prepared to accept any grades as long as they have put in good effort. And by \"good\", I mean working hard while making time for moderate amounts of leisure, enough sleep, some family time, church activities, etc. Maybe they could have scored higher grades if they (and we) had sacrificed more in terms of time, money and stress, but they have both done decently according to their abilities, so we are satisfied.

yes! my dh and I talked, I told him we are going to celebrate however much or little of the score as I have seen the efforts. I m very happy already..even if need to look for a lower tier school, so what..

Haha, for the sum of $1.5mil how many zeros are there? At least 6 zeros, not enough zeros ah? 😄

Current lifestyles of my kids I estimated if have $2500/month, they will be reasonably comfortable in their retirement years. My girl’s $1.5 mil probably could yield her $5,000/month of recurring retirement income in 18 years time (about $3,000 present value at 3% inflation).

            .......
... at mid 40s, I put my health as #1.

I suppose everyone will realise that there is no point to pursue that extra zeros at a certain point in their lives. Some earlier, some later.

For me, I won’t ask my kids to purposely “slow down” even before they step into the working society unless something amiss happens along the way like they have neglected their spouse or children in the process of pursuing their dreams.

In fact, I have also slowed down too. Firstly, because I have more or less achieved what I aim in life. My retirement fund is my fully paid up $1.2mil FH unit (solely under my name) which is currently being tenanted out. My hubby probably has his own retirement funds.

When I was in my teens, I aimed to have $10K in my bank before I reach 20yo, $100K before I hit 30yo and $1mil before I hit 40yo. The initial years were purely saving and scrimping. Being a SAHM, my fear and urgency to build up my nest egg are even greater than those with a successful career.

My first investment property was bought using cash I saved from hubby’s household 买菜钱allowance. 😂 To cut a long story short, I do not think I could and want to pursue the next zero. Simply because I realize good health is more important. Because I just recovered from colitis, now, I am willing to pay for better quality food and the LactoGG I am taking as a daily dietary supplement which is not cheap. Now I am fine to eat well and relax.

My boy who is sitting for PSLE tomorrow tells me the same thing! He wants to go to his affiliated Sec school. He says 188 score enough liao. Got affiliation benefits. Why must tuition. I say No, must put in effort! :stupid:

Sounds like lack of healthy ambitions. Working hard needs imbibing fr young.

Both my kids are reasonably clever but I don’t let up. Boys are esp cheeky (tho there are exceptions) and they’re wired to look for fun and they’ll get to find short cuts.

I noticed DS was v diff and when very young in lower pri sch, find ways to give excuses fr doing his hmwk. But headache is his results always almost perfect score. So I’ve to train him to my expectations - “mummy will be happy to see u put in effort to read, study/practice and not worried abt yr score as much”. So, I’ve never say things like “target for 8X or 9X marks” or “why don’t you get “100 marks”? I’ve on occasions told my kids when their marks dipped or when their classmates get higher scores, that I’m happy coz I saw how they’ve revised or practice their work and that’s the best I wld expect for them & that shows they hv room to keep improving. I’ve always put them to focus on effort as input and if they learn the right thing, in the right way, the scores will be there.

In effect, when we don’t focus on marks, kids will not sublimely be chasing numbers. Once kids see parents not over reacting or drama with s ores, they’ll feel less stressed & motivate themselves to learning rather then just scoring.

This shld carry the kids well in their demeanor towards not just studies but pursuit of life’s needs & trappings of ‘wants’.

There shld not be a crime to want to have some things in life, and hv some fun, without overstretching oneself. Once u’ve satisfied with the experience. Just don’t need to keep accumulating. It’ll somehow clutter your life as u think u want $XXXXXX to keep upgrading w/o realizing there’s a cost to forgo (e.g. keep chasing that extra bz deal but hardly arrive home in time to spend time reading kids to bed or spend time driving and chatting/bonding with kids and on weekends).

He completes hmwk before reaching home, revise nearing exams & uses sch holidays to do recreational learning - he likes to cook & learn extra languages, or hang out with daddy & peers for photography ard SG. This year-end, he wants to pick up archery as he left off during Pri sch days.
