2019 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2007)

Hi Parents ,

I have a debate with some of my friends relating to the PSLE tough Maths paper - challenging questions and following are their views:-
1) It is within the syallbus
2) it’s that difficult only GEP students can do
3) it does not need to undergo Maths Olympiad training
4) we are complacent
5)mathematical concepts not strong, so when questions twist … children cannot see it.

What do you think ?

Must be a rigorous debate! :nailbite: :yikes: IMHO, I think No.5 ( mathematical concepts not strong, so when questions twist .. children cannot see it.) is very likely. Students must first understand how the question is phrased before they can attempt and sometimes, students are used to certain question types, so when the wording changed, they are confused.

actually of course the more math you practise the better you become. But I will tell you that i struggle with math as a child. I never can see it no matter how I study. But if you give me humanities topic like English, wah ! straightaway I can see it in all dimensions.

Any parents have any advice on some post psle bridging program for chinese? so scared that when child goes back to school forget how to write chinese. At home, the chinese language engine is starting to wear off…

The definition of mathematics is the study of the sciences of numbers, quantities, geometry and forms.
Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus are branches of mathematics; arithmetic and simple geometry are covered in primary level maths.

Maths olympiad type of questions usually do not need long series of calculation to solve, for primary levels. But they need logical thinking.

From googling:
Gardner has identified the following intelligences: Verbal/Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Visual/Spatial, Bodily/Kinesthetic, Musical, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal and Naturalist.

Those who are good with logical thinking can see relationships between things that are not letters of the alphabet -such as shapes and symbols-, make deductions from those relationships, in order to solve problems.

If psle can test kids' ability on selling a product, we can all guess which type of kids will shine; those who have good people skills.

Kids take time to fully develop all aspects of intelligence. It's too premature to say one child is not logical or the other is not linguistic. My own opinion, is not really about the ability to grasp the concept is strong or not. But it's more important how the concept is delivered to different kids. Every child has different learning style. For a linguistic child, it's more effective to teach the concept as a story to him.

School with limited resources, can only use 1 or 2 different ways of teaching methods.

The remaining gap, could be the self confidence of the child in that subject. I believe it is damaging to label kids; who are logical, who are spatial etc.

To add on,

A kid i know, very logical and known for it too, if i recall correctly he got top 3% in ICAS ranking in sg. He has a lot to catch up in English and Chinese. Not often we see parents of such kids feedback on why MOE pitch the standard of English paper so high.

Hi bluepencil, may I know what do you mean by \"post PSLE -bridging \"programme? Is it PSLE to Sec level Chinese?
So far, I have not heard of such programs, unless your kid has CL tuition and has the opportunity to speak the langauge.

would like to enquire whether any one of you are aware of any other scholarship or bursary (besides the MOE one) that I can apply for?
I have 3 school going children and household income is not very high.

Thanks for sharing, slmkhoo, :udaman: your \"phone usage plan\" for your kids seems very strict. Have you met with any resistance from your kids? I am very impressed with how much self-discipline you instilled in your kids. I sometimes have trouble convincing them to put away their phones and concentrate in their work or family time bonding.

Of course there will be some resistance! But nothing too bad - a little lecture now and then, and the occasional reminder was enough to remind them. However, our kids know that we will do whatever we threaten, so when we laid down our rules BEFORE allowing them phones, they took us seriously. In lower sec, we did not \"convince\" them at the time we wanted them to put away their phones, we just reminded them of the rules (and the penalties). The \"convincing\" took place at the time we explained our rules, and they had to agree before they were allowed to have phones.
