Fully agree, even for non affiliated environment, school that I known make sure no same primary school students are in the same class as much as possible.

Hello, I am new.
Just want to hear from some mummies here / school of thoughts for sec school with a wide COP vs a smaller range of COP.
~ wide range better/ narrow range
My personal tot: Maybe that wide range, eg. 220-254. Maybe that school only have 1 student 254.
Anyone good in analysing such to interpret?
:thankyou:
To me, wide range usually have affiliates. They reserve spaces for students from their affiliated primary school. When that is filled up, the school open slots to the public. So if only one class is open to the public, the public competes to enter that one class. Such schools have very few high scorers. The low scorers are their affiliates and these form the bulk of the students.
Is that a good school? I doubt so. It just means they have few spaces for the public to enter, hence high COP. Standards set at the school cater to the bulk, which are average scorers.
Narrow bands usually means no affiliates. The students there made it on their own merit. Pupils there are surrounded with similiar peers. The general pace is set according to their standards i.e a good fit.
There is also one very important factor. When one joins a school with affiliates, the students there already formed their own cliques. It is very hard to break into the group. A close friend told me this when he joined my school decades ago.
To me, making friends is the most imperative experience in a sec school bec these are the friends that will see you through life. So, to be unable to break into cliques is a huge drawback. In a non-affiliated environment, everyone has to make new friends all over again. This is a strong plus.
Ps: Daddy here. So dunno whether my view is accepted?
From a father too. -
Anyone has any idea if this year cohort did better in PSLE as compared to last year? Thinking if the COP will be raised unexpectedly again and another bombshell this year.

But Whitley, Guangyang and Punggol, in an earlier example, have no affiliated pri schools.

Also, the affiliated pri sch has its own range, separated from the non affiliated students range, they are not put together for a combined range.
https://postimg.cc/YjpTmpnN
And the statement “such schools have very few high scorers” is skewed.
And as for cliques, not necessarily true too. Some students have never met another student even though they are from the same pri sch. On the other hand, some students from different pri schools, are already good friends because they go to the same tuition class. And also, there are cases like Anderson Pri, where most of the 23x go to the same sec sch in AMK. So one may think this sec sch has no affiliated pri but actually so many of them come from Anderson. Same for MBS and KHS, bulk of their students go to these few sec schs in the east. So my point is, you cant really predict the presence of cliques by looking at whether the sec sch has any affiliated pri sch. -

i think the forumers are referring to the Cat C 3rd language (french, german, jap, spanish). Students who r not in the top 10% can only choose malay n arabic, i think.
Haha. I have mistaken then. Thanks for clearing it up
My kid only has 245 and was also offered 3rd language. Top 10% would be lower than 250 base on MOE criteriaMrkatong\" post_id=\"1947964\" time=\"1574407969\" user_id=\"181482:

I have a colleague, kid got 250 - still offered a 3rd language - so I guess top 10% is 250 this year?

My younger daughter comes from a non-affiliate nbh sch, she goes to an affiliate sec school. Her experience in sec sch is wonderful. Making friends is not an issue.
I think it might hv to do with her class not having many affiliates from the pri side next door (only 1 I recall) The affiliates in her class are not from next door. The rest of the classes are half affiliates or even almost entire classes of affiliates from next door.
My older daughter goes to a non-affiliate sec sch which is pretty competitive. That environment is a little trickier : )
This is my personal experience here.
I think the competition (academic) in a school has more impact on making friends than the number of affiliates in the school.
And making friends depends a lot on your own personality.
Which girl/co-ed sec sch has an affiliated pri sch next door and another affiliated pri sch that is not next door? -

Ah I see. Sorry I am confused here.
Your daughter found friends in her class. During my sec school, I have friends from all 10 classes in my level. Bec I have been put in the same class as some, if not most of them, throughout 6 years of primary school. Who do you think has more friends?ilovelaksa\" post_id=\"1947861\" time=\"1574399705\" user_id=\"88602:

Does it mean you went to yr affiliate sec sch? My daughter is not from an affiliate pri sch gg to an affiliate sec sch.
I think quite obviously if one is from an affiliate pri sch n gg to an affiliate sec sch, he/she will hv more friends initially.
If we are talking about 4 years of sec sch, then knowing almost the whole school is possible. Right now, my daughter has friends that spans all classes and all levels : ) They dont even talk about pri sch anymore.
Dynamics do change over time. Some of my daughter’s friends who were from the same pri sch and who used to be close in pri sch are now closer to others in sec sch from other pri sch.
To me, quantity of friends is not important.
Actually, I think it’s good for a non-affiliate to go to an affiliate sec sch. Good skill to learn breaking through an affiliate clique : )
Only speaking from my experience with one child in this environment though. -
Hi, anyone came across of getting into a secondary school with COP 1 or 2 points higher than PSLE Results?

Hi Hazeline, these affiliated schools have different COP for affiliates n non-affiliate. Eg CHIJ St Nick , COP is 230 with affiliation and 253 for non-affiliation. COP will increase this year for affiliate due to 20% set aside for non-affiliate.
I would think otherwise. Those schools who have to open up to outsides (eg.PLMGS) would see an increase in COP because previously, their COP was artificially lowered to accommodate the affiliated students.hazeline\" post_id=\"1947869\" time=\"1574400358\" user_id=\"18065:
Want to seek opinion of parents here re the new 20% for non-affiliated. I know some schools COP will drop this year as they take in mostly their own pri students (like PLMGS) previously. Just wondering if anyone knows about schools like CHIJ St Nick or SCGS? Their COP is high for non-affiliate but I wonder if they have already started taking in more outsiders in previous years. If so, this means their COP is not \"artifically high\". My dd score 248, a bit short to go to her dream schools which are in the 250 range.
I am wondering if COP for non-affiliate will drop. If these schools traditionally already accept many non-affiliates, then COP for non-affiliate will likely maintain. Just wondering if any parents have infor re CHIJ St Nick and SCGS non-affilate %
I think these 2 already take in more than 20% non affiliated students for O levels for years. -
Timmy21\" post_id=\"1947961\" time=\"1574407523\" user_id=\"122721:
we encourage our DD to go for 3rd language, becos she is naturally interested in languages n it's a good opportunity to get out of school n make more frens. The utility aspect of the 3rd language is a secondary consideration but who knows if it will be important later in life. I do know of a fren who is now heading a French company's regional office becos he took French at O and A levels.
Unfortunately the 3rd language classes now are grouped by schools. So little chance to make friends from other schools.
Different strokes for different folks - as the saying goes - there are some students who are truly motivated to take up a 3rd language - my friend's kid loves Japan and took up Japanese - in fact, the only motivation for taking HMT was to qualify for the \"higher\" 3rd languages, like Japanese.meremortal\" post_id=\"1947958\" time=\"1574407184\" user_id=\"7232:
Er....why would anyone want to study a 3rd language? My DD1 in Cedar sec 3 IP tells me all her peers who took 3rd language regretted. Maciam jiak bah bo sai bang. Already so busy. Got free time, might as well go have a life...
The kid is now a young adult and working in Singapore, but with a focus on Japan and travels there once a month on business - simply because of the ability to converse in Chinese, Japanese and English.
So, yeh, that is ONE answer to your \"why\"?
