Basically, apply 5W1H to the given phrase and getting the relevant answer from the sentence/paragraph in which the given phrase was in.

E.g. Q17 \"她只是在装聋作哑\"
- Who is 她
- What is 装聋作哑
- What did she 装聋作哑 about
- Why did she 装聋作哑

Q18 按要求做了
- Who 按要求做了
- Who made the 要求
- What was the 要求

Try to relate back to the context of the story. In the case of the given example, did 夸奖and 鼓励 work?
- Why (did it work or did it not work)
- Consequences (what happened after 夸奖and 鼓励 were received)
- Advantages and/or disadvantages (of 夸奖and 鼓励): if the question did not mention anything along the line of \"从文中\" (i.e. from the passage) then relate these to actual life situation by giving example(s)

Is it common for kids to fail Sec one HCL zuowen? Even for those who got A* for CL And merit/distinction for HCL in PSLE? Heard this is due to the big jump in expectations from P6 to Sec 1. Appreciate your insights. Thanks!

Hi sean wife,

It is not uncommon for half (or even more) of the class to fail and/or barely pass Sec 1 HCL compo.

Several reasons include:
- No longer picture compo, so story plotting skill is tested

- Even for kids who took HCL in Pri school, the no. of sch HCL compo most of them attempted are not sufficient in effectively prepping them to be ready for 情境作文

- Compo weightage is upon 60 marks (instead of 40) - usually, the highest in class will score around 48-ish

- There are more criteria/requirements involved in Sec 情境作文 question. Thus the chances of not meeting criteria and/or writing out of topic is much higher. A 2019 Sec 1 HCL example:

- There's a need to build upon their existing range of vocab and rhetoric approach - e.g. need to apply more \"show, not tell\", analogy, personification, metaphor etc.

It will take time to adapt to the requirements and to strengthen the foundation but with the right mentality and consistent effort, it's definitely manageable.

(On a side note, A1 is 'just' 75 (and above), so need to be realistic - it's not as 'straightforward' as Pri level where those who are good in the subject can 'easily' score 80s-90s.)
