2019 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2007)
-
Heard this year psle highest is 282 from a neighborhood school
-
To some secondary schools, whether the child is top PSLE scorer, gep, from top school or neighbourhood school does not matter anymore. Cos they moved on.

Actually, why was there a fall in the top schools' COP last year? Was it related to an overall drop in performance for the 2018 cohort? Or did a lot of top students already DSA into the school?
Another weeks of waiting! Then follow by appeal for some. Last year quite drama due to unexpected fall and rise of COP. Hope this year is more predictable.
My friend asked me to predict COP for this year. I wildly speculated said it would go up for the top tier schools mainly because I think these schools were even more stingy with DSA CO this year. So most people will enter by t-score into top schools. But I think the mid-tier schools COP would hold steady at last year's COP cos they continued to be more generous with DSA offers. And this started since last year, when they gave out close to the maximum allowed 20% of their Sec 1 places to DSA students.
I actually think the 2019 cohort generally didn't do as well. It stems from the tone MOE sets and therefore schools are not pushing children to chase every last mark anymore. Don't hear of that many super high scorers. But a lot of children bunched around the 23x-25x range. So I think the bell curve isn't very flat.
Just random thoughts on a sleepless night. -
Conversely I think for tough year, the brilliant ones will be differentiated from the pack due to perceived lower cohort mean and therefore higher t-score for those who can tackle those difficult qns.
Anyway I was hoping nygh cop stays the same as a gal that I know is hoping very hard to be able to get in. -

What does this mean to understand kids who score 265 last yr, compare with kids who score 265 this year?

If the sec 1 posting were to be done based on the algorithm of best results go to schs with higher past cop, then if top tiers cop are to raise, the mid tiers cop are to raise as well, by virtue of filling up places by order. Provided the DSA places out of total places are on par among the schools.

If there were substantial kids appealed successfully to higher cop schs last year, the cop of mid tiers are artificially fixed higher than they shld.
Hopefully the situation will go back to natural this yr. -

Tscore can only be compared within the respective cohort. It should not be used to compare across different cohorts.
What does this mean to understand kids who score 265 last yr, compare with kids who score 265 this year?
Or actually they are not apple to apple comparison?
In 2017 there were many whose tscore were in the 280s with top scorer at 285 or 286. It does not mean that the 2017 cohort is brighter but more likely the papers were more difficult than 2019’s paper. -

Agreed. A year with tougher papers would allow the brightest stars to shine more than the rest. Isn’t it true that this year there are more kids > 270?
Similarly if a child is particularly strong in chinese amidst a general cohort that isn’t so strong, I believe that boosts the t-score quite a bit too! Received some stats of top scorers in mostly chinese primary schools, their schools have done well this year. Numbers went up significantly.Imp75\" post_id=\"1950159\" time=\"1574901162\" user_id=\"2358:
