Agree with hb. Parents will never give up on their kids no matter what.

There could be hormonal changes around this age…plus the psle stress etc…I see changes too this year but I think I been going easy with dd most of the time esp during her stressful time. Let her follow her own ways of doing things etc…then use the outcomes to ‘educate’ her. You will lose some but you may win some…I hope, as a parent.

Now that their this stressful period is near over, just waiting for the posting results. Let her enjoy the holiday with family members/friends as much as possible…eat and play. You likely see them back to the person that you know better…dd1 been neglecting dd2 for almost the whole year, chasing her out from her room, told me her sister is disturbing her from her studies and now they are spending all the time with each other which I feel blessed…It is never too late…I had at a point of time thought dd was drifting away from me and when we had a deep talk after one incident, she told me that she thought that I was going away from her and she was feeling so scared. What we think may not be what they feel.

I realise the teenagers (ie my kids) nowadays are too focused on studies or leisure like social media. They are so lack of basic knowledge. Just the other day, I asked one of them to cook rice. Even though they had taken Food Studies, they would come back and ask "need to wash the rice?". Really face-palm…this is the generation of maid-brought-up-kids" who have absolutely no idea how to take care of themselves…

I made lists every now and again, especially before long school vacations, of things I felt my kids needed to learn to do. Not the academic stuff, but things like cook rice, fry eggs, sew on buttons, clean their rooms, or whatever. We would make it an activity to do together. They would grumble a bit, but it was good to spend that time together, and they also learnt something new (not that they got expert at most of those things, but enough that they aren't too clueless!).

I did the same with my kids. During school holidays, they’re not busy with sch work/projects so it’s also my way of occupying them with lifeskills & they don’t sink into their gadgets for hours. Not healthy.

Cooking, visiting grandparents & cousins, baking grandpa’s favorite cheesecake, tidying after every meals, separating clothes for wash, packing their own bookshelves & dusting. Teenagers shld hv the ability to help plan holidays, so I assigned them to search for info on flights, accommodation & categories sightseeing spots for family to decide together.

There are lots for them to learn & do and I’ll pull them out whenever I see them engaged in laptops or hp more than an hour. They can always go back to it, but they’ll likely not volunteer ard the house bcoz most of us hv maids & their minds are time to ‘throw’ or depend on helpers alr.

I get my teenagers to go buy groceries/pack food whenever possible, on their way back from school (when he needed to pop by bookstore at the mall, he will sms me) or piano class. They learned to look out for moldy cherry tomatoes packed in the box and choose better looking salmon fillet or veg. And also sequence the items to buy (pick out frozen and raw food just before check out) and look out for deals (if i asked for 1 and there are \"2 for....\" offer). 1 commented that $20 actually couldn't buy as much as he thought. Another commented now he knows it is tiring to walk around to fulfil few different food orders with bags of groceries on hand and taking public transport, like i always do. 😂

Initially you see them bochap, talk with each other only I need to see the bus number..then can see them being impatient, say leg turning jelly so tired let's take cab etc..lectured them, now tell me want to take a bus just get down at any stop and walk around or take a bus go all the way to terminal station then come back, also more alert now on which buses going to where, at least now head look up at where we going..slowly la not many places we going to anyway.

Can see they have different shopping style/habits.
Ds1 is now very good at sniffing out deals. 😂 he likes shopping more than ds2. He is not open to product substitution if certain brands not available, so he will confirm with me alternative brands. ds2 will whatsapp me to confirm about the deals. He will however just pick a price-equivalent substitution if i have no instructions to stick to a particular brand.

Regarding public transport, you need to run through with them what to do if miss stop, bus breakdown, take wrong bus. These happened to my boys before. Plus plenty of reminder to not leave anything on board or run for bus/train (ds2 doesn't listen!! :spank:) . Girls need to be reminded to stay vigilant and seek help if need arises.
Most kids will look at hp when waiting for bus/mrt! For ds1, he relies on bus app to estimate time of bus arrival so no need to keep looking up.
