low impact year, heard that, I phew.. foundation for latter years, I sweat liao 😆 dh says continue, dd says don't want and I m thinking let's give it a try to be on own but frankly speaking in heart, scared lei..but as of now, since still dont know alot of things for next year school time schedule yet..maybe just wait a little while.
It may be a low-impact year in terms of the results, but it is important to get the foundation right.
However, it is also going to be busy, with CCA's, projects, school events, etc.
If your kid didnt go in via DSA, then they will likely have to do the CCA trials in Jan and the CCA's begin in Feb and that takes up 2-3 days a week. If they got in via DSA, (sports/ performing arts), they will likely to start in Jan and there are also zone competitions slated from Jan onwards.

So having tuition is going to eat up precious time as well. There are many students I know in my daughter's school now that drop tuition after PSLE and are coping ok as they learn how to manage time & consult their teachers.

Just a consideration - I am not recommending to take or not to take tuition - you know your children best.

Among the few tuition centres that we inquired, one is already fully booked for many popular time slots, another one is 80% full. I am quite surprised that there are so many parents even more kiasu than me... 😆

So we are behind

And when you say fully booked and 80% full, for weekdays too? 😓 and so many students know their school schedule already.. wow!

I was worry about the limited slot issue before holiday starts..but after holiday started, we all happy happy liao. WIl give a shout for help later 😓

Have you all tried 华艺学院? They’ve centres at Jurong East, West Coast (near Nan Hua) & Sin Ming (bear RI). They ground students well & have consistent excellent results. More importantly, they teach more than just textbook & incl values & help motivate kids to look ahead. They organise sharing sessions by past students (学哥学姐) to Share their learning journey) to inspire each other.

They hv chatgrp with parents & we can clear our doubts on syllabus, kids progress, local awards & recognition, new trends in universities around the world, etc

DS started sec 1 with them & will continue till O level.

Just sharing their 2019 students PSLE outcome.

Note : I do not own this tuition centre (lol, I’ve not no such ability lah) & hv no other vested interests. Just sharing a good place that helps our kids better than 汪老师 we previously attend. JMO

Hi rawsalmon,
Diff schools uses diff textbooks & some schools developed their own study/teaching materials.

If u’re keen, I do hv some IP materials & books to let go. Pls pm me if u’re keen.

Edited to Add subjects :-

1. English/Literature
2. CL/HCL
3. Math
4. Life Sciences
5. Physical Science
6. Social Science
7. History
8. Geography

some schools hv sec students do Food Sciences & Arts as additional

Esteema, dont you need to keep those textbooks for reference in future years? In Sec, after the end of year exam at each year, can clear the book liao?

No need coz we bought 1st 2 years (I was too gangjiong), then realized DS never touch coz his sch IP prep them for IB and they’ve their own in-house developed curriculum. 2nd year I was still 老套子 worried DS still need, thot maybe 1st DS just not pick up yet tho good grades, but he protested. By end of 2nd year, he’s proven to me I’ve wasted my effort & :moneyflies: buying them after seeing his grades. I took the attitude then that whether he needs/not I’ll just buy & provide, put on shelf & he 自助. I was passe. :scratchhead:
I think I could understand..I also salute myself when see so many Math/Sci books that I have bought for dd.. even her own tuition/school notes also never read..actually just need a set of books for each subject and a printer to print past year papers, think can liao. Now for dd2, I dont think I will buy anymore books maybe just Chi since read got some changes ?

MKS,

They’ve very dedicated teachers. I finally chose 华艺 becoz their help each child to identify areas of weakness to work on.
Hi, I hope more parents can see the danger of having their decisions dictated by PSLE scores. Hopefully my personal stories can help you to find a decision-making process that suits your family.

I know this article that has a shelf life of no more than 3 days (before 27 November the deadline), but I certainly hope it can go a long way to help more families. Happy reading and have some laughs.

Thank you for sharing ur story. Ours is very similar to your story, still finding consensus on RI and HCI. Boy wants his first and only choice, HCI. That is why we are still heafache over this and yet to submit online.

Rawsalmon, may I ask why your boy first and only choice is HCI? How does he know about HCI that made him decide this is the only school he wants?
He has been there during open house and love the school super big compound. He found RI compound cramp as compared to HCI. Tats his so called reason for choosing HCI.

thanks Zappy for you views..

I been reading that CCA is going to take up 2 days, better prepare 2 days for it..

I had the impression that dd not been getting full/much benefits from tuitions..maybe in P6 she is more alert, somehow that is how I feel..but too scared to stop then as I m not a discipline type of parent. Now at Sec1, my thought is no immediate national exam probably best time to try out..but again scared the foundation will become too shaky later on. Also that at O, which I hope is much less demanding than IP, gave me another good reason to try go without.

Some CCA's are 2 days, some are 3 days. On some occasions, can be a bit more during competition season eg. if the day of competition does not fall on the designated training days then they need to go for competition plus training.

During the orientation, you can get more info from the school on their schedules. Your daughter can also ask during the CCA trials in Jan/ Feb when she gets the chance to trial or audition for her preferred activity for the next 4 yrs. Typically, the school's niche CCAs will have more trainings & practice sessions.
