We had cancelled & receive refunds all within a month.
On a related travel matter, ust last week we had to place a $300 deposit & this morning we received details of refund into our credit card stating details of amt, last 4 digits of credit card & date/duration of our stay. -

Sometimes, but not always. You can check on the hotel's website when you've selected a hotel.

Trivago simply polls a list of other websites and give you a list of their prices. So I guess you can always get the cheapest one by using Trivago, but that may or may not be cheaper than booking direct. I haven't done a comprehensive comparison, but booking direct is not always cheaper. On the other hand, sometimes they will have rooms and deals available which are not sold through the hotel booking websites. I mostly prefer to book through a familiar interface, and if I'm travelling to more than 1 place, and if I don't speak the local language, having all the bookings made through one website is neater.

DH typically do the booking thro one of these websites as u can do free cancellation if yr plans change. It also gives us more time to scout. S’times I’ll follow up with checks to direct locations - s’times u get them cheaper, s’times u don’t but they upgrade u or provide extras such as b’fast/meals or not charge for extra beds, etc.
Our June trip to Taiwan going direct enable us to get a lot of free services such as owner loves to promote eco-trip to view their scenery & famous spots & we got 50% discounts for ferry trip. Our last trip in Nov to PJ, our direct booking came with club entitlement which includes b’fast, afternoon tea break and evening cocktail - they serve finger food but u’re free to any amt u wish to take (spaghetti, Turkish or Mediterranean food, pandan chicken, etc and they brew yr choice of coffee/tea). Clubhouse comes with penthouse view.
So do try check out direct. You never know. -

I use Booking.com and Agoda, mainly, and have used Expedia as well. For many years now. So far, I've encountered no problems, even with cancellations and refunds.
