Unless really got money to risk, then not really worthwhile to buy a property for a 3 or 4 years study.

I calculated before when my son was in Cambridge. Rented a studio apartment of about 500+ sq ft in a convenient location at about 600 odd pounds. That time pound exchange rate was 2ish to 1 SGD (now about 1.7, depreciated about 15%). The total amount of rental that needed to be paid was just not worth my efforts to go and research and study about foreigner ownership, commission, taxes etc to ‘make’ money. Gladly paid rental.

When I was studying in the UK, the capital appreciation for London property was so great that all Singaporeans who bought a 1 bedroom apartment, after the 3 or 4 years of study, the appreciation was enough to cover the entire cost of education and more! Those days it was about 20,000 GBP a year.

I personally feel for Oxbridge, if the College provides accommodation for 3/4 years, it may be better for the student to live in College and immerse in it. London is a different story though.
