What will the students do in class when there is no Math lecture? How about other subjects? Have lectures?
Practice..they go through maths tutorial questions in class.
8 in 10 of them scored distinctions for H2 Maths in last year's A level results according to a compilation in kiasuparent forum.

Econs and Chemistry still have lectures, i don't know about other subjects but i'm guessing not for Eng Lit too.
A lecture may not always be the most effective way to deliver a lesson.
Students can get bored if the lecturer is just reading off from the lecture notes or students can get easily distracted in a large LT.

End of the day, the students are preparing for the A levels and I'm sure the school has that in mind too.
If it is not mass lectures, then they will come up with something else which they think it's likely to work better.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Can anyone advise if it is worth taking SMTP or GATE?

Dd is in one of the gate class.
I think they have some pull out lessons in JC1.
Instead of attending lectures, they will do some team based learning - The students are given a case study to analyse and the group has to present/justify their answers to the teacher facilitator.
(Eg case study about 2 Uni friends and topic on coffee
They will explore questions like why one need to consume coffee on a regular basis, the other does not, the effects of coffee on neurons when one of them gets jittery , whether genes play a role in caffeine tolerance and is there any connection between caffeine and Parkinson’s disease etc.
Some self study of certain topics (based on lecture notes) will be required for the lectures that they did not attend and the students would still need to do up the tutorials that the others in the cohort is doing. They will go through the tutorials in class, so they can clear up any doubts on the topics which they may have.
There are some elective modules which the students can sign up for -workshop/field trip/seminars. It’s mainly conducted in the 3 hr afternoon session on Thursday last year.
They also have to choose a topic of interest to do research on and present it at the smtp-gate fair.

I am not sure if there are any changes to the program and different gate classes/smtp classes may do it differently.
I think there will be a parents briefing on subject combi so maybe u can find out more about it then?
The students will also be briefed on the program as well, so yr child can sign up for it if he finds it interesting.

Just to add on.. there is a selection test for students who are interested in GATE

No prob. Btw, when i say they are doing practices and going through the maths tutorial questions, its with their maths teachers, not on their own.

                    @worry73mum

There will be Project Work in JC1.
                    It’s an A level subject.
Mine use the iPad from her Sec school days, she has classmates who use macbook/laptop/iPad/ handphone.
I think as long as it is a capable device will do.
I am not sure if there is any requirement for subjects like computing.
If they do need a device for any subject/assignment, the students would be informed accordingly.

I called the Admin staff but they said they did not have the information as it is decided by the top management. This is what I could find out.
