Mr Gan Thiam Poh (Ang Mo Kio GRC), who had asked Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong what lessons can be learnt from the coronavirus situation and what can be improved upon to better prepare Singaporeans for a pandemic outbreak.
Mr Gan had also asked if the Government will include the production of masks and other medical protective gear as a strategic facility, and support investment in such a facility here.
Singapore is looking for new sources of supply for masks and developing capabilities to manufacture them locally as other Asian countries clamp down on mask exports, Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong has said.

However, from an economic perspective, given Singapore’s high cost structure, it may not be practical to set up a plant. After all, SARS happened 17 years ago and in between, the local demand for masks is low. At the same time, we are still dependent on other countries to import raw materials to make masks.
Can we hold courses to teach fellow Singaporeans how to make reusable masks? I see Taiwanese doing that. We can do our part to reduce our carbon footprint. -

Does anyone know whether a passenger who transits in an airport is considered as having "travelled" to that country? Eg. If someone transits in Seoul, will he be considered as having travelled in Korea? I have a friend planning to fly to Singapore, transiting in Seoul. I know there are no advisories against Seoul itself now, but will he be affected if the bar extends to all of Korea?

Ya, hopefully this episode will subside soon. SKorea was quick enuf to quarantine it’s affected cases & looking at snapshots of their efforts, hope the cases will slow in spreading further. The other day was just chatting with my frds why SK’s medical can’t help prevent deaths with so many supposedly docs but then maybe those medical personnels used to creating ‘beauties’ but not able to be Swift in saving lives? But huh, do I think the govt go into Swift action to DORSCON red tho announce as orange SKoreans will criticize their govt say one thing, do ano. The way they act with suited up personnel’s sanitizing trains & public areas causes fear & panic? Italy is just as swift in efforts containing spread.

I’m not confident with Iran. Definitely don’t seem to be effective in controlling spread nor seem to hv ability to treat affected individuals. I do hope WHO or volunteers fr Red Cross able to render critical help to stem the spread & save lives there.
We’re all in this together. If there’s any weak link, the rest of the world will not be spared.
Thankful SG hv been able to frequently discharge patients who hv recovered & contact tracing efforts really commendable. Not easy tasks for those who hv to crack their brains to interview patients & relatives/frds to trace connections. Hats off to our medical specialist & scientists able to trace connections of clusters thro test kits. It’s first in the world seems. Proud we’ve such capabilities. Above all, truly truly thankful no bad news of D. -

When is yr frd’s impending travel? At the moment, SKorea’s clusters seemed to be confined to 2 identified locations. Hope with their vigilance, it doesn’t spread to rest of SK, owise if escalates, not abt having travelled or touch its border line but yr frd shld be more concerned abt catching virus in enclosed environment.

Or we should get sme produce hands sanitizers/ disinfectant too, dun think there is too much chg in biz op process if they have existing plant doing chemical / cleaning/washing stuff (another :scratchhead: ) too -
The worldwide scramble (and shortage) of masks is just going to continue, with more and more medium-sized countries (but many times larger than Singapore) being affected.
Hand sanitizers should be simple and easy to produce large-scale.
