thks for posting the link

just chanced upon this thread, very interesting…so, if gg by the url link provided abv, it shld be ‘bao(3)’ which is correct, meaning ‘treasure’. in this case, hv we been wrong to say ‘bao(3) bao(1)’ when describing a ‘baby’?

It should be 第三声 for the first 宝 and 轻声 for the second 宝. Just like 妈妈, 姐姐,公公, etc… the second word is always 轻声 regardless which 声 the first word was.
Hope this helps… -
thks for responding, cmm.
oh, perhaps I wasn't clear enuf,
what I actually meant was, when I went to the URL link provided abv, I saw only 1 tonation for this character. There are many chinese characters which can be read in different 'tone' and when I see that the link only provided 1, I automatically assumed that it has only 1 tonation for this character and if so, then bao bao - baby, wld deemed to be incorrect liao lor? hahaha... hmm, perhaps i shld try the link with other characters and see if they all come out in only just 1 tonation and if so, then my doubts'd be cleared.

Under normal circumstances, 宝 should be pronounced bao(3). When it is used together as in 宝宝 (baby), it should be pronounced as bao(3) bao, with no intonation for the second 宝 to indicated 轻声.
Indeed, 宝 in 轻声 sounds like 第一声, just in a \"lighter\" tone, if you get what I mean...

then I am really confused. :?
Berries have this e-learning website and they pronounced it as bǎo bǎo. I am afraid my ds will be confused.
Like what cmm has mentioned, I still remember I was taught with no intonation for second character. -
I just went into the website again. This is interesting. I looked up for words like 妈妈, 姐姐,公公 etc.
They are pronounced correctly. (second character with no intonation)
Wonder how come in this case of 宝宝, they actually pronounced it as bǎo bǎo. -
