Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) Updates
-
I am very concerned on the locally transmitted covid-19 infection here. As at yesterday, we have 1189 cases while Hong Kong has 862 cases. We are 38% higher! Yesterday alone we have 75 new cases while Hong Kong has only 17 new cases.
My sister lives in Hong Kong (she married a Hongkonger) so we have been comparing the implementation of preventive measures. There are 4 things that are different.
1. Most of people in HK wear masks everyday
2. No school since CNY
3. People arriving from overseas are swabbed at the airport
4. People serving SHN are wearing “bracelet”
We have addressed number 1 and 2 but have we addressed number 3 and 4? My niece came back to Hong Kong from UK about 10 days ago. She is currently serving SHN in a hotel. She can’t even leave the room because she is not given a card key. If she goes out, the door will slam behind her and she will be locked out. If she asks the receptionist to open the door, she will be reported to the government and face consequences. Food delivery (from home or order) is placed in the lobby and the hotel staff will bring the food up and place the food inside a plastic box in front of her room. A few days ago she received a notice that there were 2 UK students removed from the hotel because they were tested positive from the swab test done at the airport although they were asymptomatic. Can you imagine if these 2 asymptomatic students walk around thinking they are not carrying virus? How many people would have been infected?
Then come my next point. In HK, those serving SHN have to wear a bracelet. The material is similar to what patients wear in the hospital. This works as a deterrent because my sister said public does not treat these people kindly if they roam around on street or malls. Public will say sarcastic remarks to these people. It will be better if the bracelet is like the ones in Taiwan where the wearer will get SMS once he/she steps out of the house/place of quarantine. But it is better something than nothing. Now if somebody who has to serve SHN but roaming on the street or malls, will we know? How many people would the person infect if he/she thinks he/she is asymptomatic so it is ok to just go out to buy food? Now there are thousands of people need to be quarantined. Can we at least put bracelet on these people? So at least we can tell them off or report to police if we see them on the road/mall/bank/wet market, etc. -
if parent’s of a school going kid a confirmed case…will the parents of the rest of the kids be informed? If school kid a confirmed case, we could see from the news, and the parents of the all other kids can take extra precautions, if want to.

HBL (Secondary)
May I ask if students of Pri and Sec schools using ZOOM for their Home Based Learning?
Secondary school students used SLS (Students learning space) for most academic subjects like Sec 1 ( English, Maths, Science, Chinese, History, Geography, Literature, Music, Art). Not zoom technology
Zoom technology is used, for
- assembly
- CCE
(Eg. when Teacher teach students that cyber bullying is wrong, etc)
CCE : Character & Citizenship Education -

I also compare our situation with HK’s. Both are small cities and HK is just a stone throw from China, yet the number of cases are lower than ours. -
Some sec sch students don’t use zoom nor student learning space but Microsoft Teams. Whichever works for the schools I guess. Think sec sch students shld be independent to develop self learning skills & the desire to search for & learn new things. As parents, we do our best to provide the learning resources - books, WiFi connectivity, variety of craft materials or hobby supplies. We just stocked up some flour, yeast, cheese, herbs, etc enough for a month of baking bread & cakes, sharpening culinary skills with kids. Their motivation is to personally cook for MIL to uplift her fr grief & sadness. Turn this situation to a constructive situation, bring joy to others.

I collected the reusable mask.

I’m not sure if I’m on SHN wld I welcome being tagged like a prisoner. I’m fine to be confined but the tag might add to my stress & for some depression fr alr suffering the fear & angst in being a possible COVID patient and the tag just add on to seal that trauma of having to go thro the near death ordeal.

Unfortunately, we’ve been putting in measure & communicating to the local community but hv largely not taken extra measures to communicate same serious msg to all foreign workers (who need pics to be drawn for u’stand’g).
For now, many clusters are increasing & I noticed the latest waves are fr the foreign workers’ dormitories. At least 3 ministers hv made their presence & made clear instructions to seriously follow be followed & actively institute new social distancing to dorm life (staggered cooking roster, bathrooms, btwn blocks, etc). Pubs are closed to limit socially spread incidents.
After 27 March, all returnees were issued SHN or swiftly put in hotels/resorts for 14 days. It’s most likely the 1/2 weeks before that we did not rope in returnees for SHN that the spread had gone into the respective clusters like the Wilby, uni students that I feel are most unconscionable. It’s good that the authorities acted swiftly to cancel some student passes, etc. I certainly hope those SC/PRs are given stern enuf warnings/punishment to deter other active youths/young adults.
Human habits are really hard to change, no matter how much to try yr best to advice. I had a mother who asked me can I help raise a petition to keep the sch close to extend the 1 week Term 2 sch holiday coz she worry for those families who returned fr holidays & yet send their kids to sch & infect her kids. In the same breathe, she said she also want to keep her kids at home coz she has an elderly mum who hv many pre-existing conditions. She’ll stop her nephews & nieces fr visiting (mostly returning fr Indonesia & US). She had just celebrated her son’s birthday with all the nep & nieces & aunties & uncles! Cheeeeez!
If we all stay home cooperatively for the next month, hopefully, cases will decline. Let’s work hard to fight & contain this enemy to human race. Let’s all exercise higher hygiene practices & personal self-discipline for social distancing. Be strong & courages Singapore! -

Passionate words well articulated by my medical friend :
"We’ve only got one shot at this.
50 years to build this country. We only have 1 month to save it. After this we will probably take a few years to rebuild what we lost and not sure if we can get it all back. I’m not sure whether people get this when they crowd NTUC Fairprice, Mac Donalds etc. Do we really need all this stuff in this particular time and space?
I think what many are articulating here is a LKY style of hard no nonsense approach. We are after all his children in a way - he was our growing up Prime Minister and we can’t deny there’s some of him in all of us. I can feel LHL’s pain. Everything built up lost in an instant. Gained so many accolades internationally but our people can’t think and act for a greater good and future, all about gratifying an immediate want or about me being a victim or having all this supposed hardship.
We need to think about everything we do from now onwards - whether it will be for the good of Singapore."

The government has failed at point 3 & 4, allowing returning students to serve SHN at own homes and residents to leave Singapore to go traveling during the March holidays (at least 40000 of them according to moe LOA number)
