Hundreds of boxes of masks fr Indonesia, China & Vietnam sold at 2 shops near fruit stall of Clementi West St 2 market. Yday DH bought for MIL.

      https://postimg.cc/cvN3T0BV

That’s the thing I am puzzled. Even a fruit stall in Clementi can get hold of hundreds of boxes of surgical masks from Indonesia, China and Vietnam, why Watson and Guardian Pharmacies forever “stock not avail”? And since surgical masks are available, why bother to only give us a symbolic no brand, 2ply cotton mask?

Nope. These are not sold at fruit stall but pop-up stalls near the fruit stall.

These pop-up stalls has been selling boxes of masks since late March, together with 2nd hand handphones. One stall sells children surgical masks too. Not sure if our supplies will continue but these masks come at a premium price tag. Doubt it’s wise to continue using on daily basis as it’ll not be sustainable as it adds to any family a heavy burden (with additional need for WiFi for WFH & HBL; increase electricity to run lighting & fan; besides getting laptops & desktops).

Countries like Taiwan, Vietnamese and even M’sia hv their own manufacturing but our atas economy do not run them & even if we do, we’ll probably hv more foreign workers on masks machines. My family tries to use the reusable ones, leaving surgical masks for MIL’s exclusive use since she belongs to more vulnerable Grp.

Hence, not sure if it drains national reserves meant for frontline staff. :xedfingers:
That is the irony. Parallel importers, pop-up stalls, Value shop etc can get hold of surgical masks and sell them, while Singapore pharmacies don’t have any? This result in Singaporeans paying through their noses to lay their hands on surgical masks. Whereas govt intervention would have helped like limit restrict EACH family can buy 10pcs of surgical masks per week.

One piece of surgical mask, we can reuse it for 2-3 days, I keep mine inside a ziplock bag.

Btw, one reusable cotton mask is also not sufficient for those working at essential services. No need to wash? Can’t dry by next day.

The effective lifespan of the Govt reusable masks was also NOT made known. Are they good for 10 washes? 15th washes or ???

what I m thinking…may not be correct…those that we see outside are mostly non surgical mask but normal 3 ply mask…maybe what our pharmacies are selling are likely surgical mask (dunno as till now haven’t even get 1 pc from pharmacy)…

Mask are definitely more easily available now. About $32 per 50 pieces. Even online prices have gone down from the $60 to $30 per box. But made in China. And yes, are 3 ply surgical masks. My friend say she only buy from Watson’s or Guardians. But these 2 shops still no supply. Not sure how long these pandemic will last, so bought a few boxes. Lesson learnt, buy in case out of stock again...
Of cos lah, those from Guardians or Watson’s pharmacies are deemed more reliable than those sold at pop-up stalls. It is about quality assurance! Peace of mind.

In January I only had a few pieces of surgical masks, now I have a few boxes in my store. I would think that our National stockpile must have also increased by a few folds by now, as we all agree that surgical masks are now more easily available.

The situation now is quite different from that in Jan, China now massively producing surgical masks (and exporting them) and we have more asymptotic cases in the community. So Govt should change its strategy, Govt could progressively release some surgical masks through the pharmacies BUT restrict buying to like 10pcs per family per week.

It is ironical that we can’t get surgical masks from pharmacies but need to buy from the “black market” JKJK
True... but beggars cannot be choosers...

Last time I wear mask to pick up my girl, she still ask me if I not well and government say healthy no need mask.

So envy...see the HP Kongers can go shopping eat dim sum....how we come to this stage

Taiwanese has been able to buy limited numbers on a weekly basis since Jan but NOW? Now the govt alerting their ppl may not be sufficient masks & they hv factories making masks for their domestic needs.

Spore don’t hv masks factory so we’ve no choice. Actually can get some is quite good alr. I hardly go out these days except to mkt & NTUC. So minimal use of masks coupled with stay-home cooperation to help reduce spread & reduce own risk. Don’t go out unnec then don’t need to utilize masks, as masks does not provide 100% protection if the Japanese research on micro-droplets inform us.

Let the frontliners hv the very needed surgical or N95 masks to nurse & save lives.

Ok lor, that perhaps explains why Taiwan only has 300+ cases up till now.

Essential services in sg include banking, manufacturing, parks, enforcement, police, healthcare, deliveries, transport, hawkers, supermarkets etc

                        Also those in news, hotels,...
For those who are not required to go out, a number of ppl had to even go out yesterday on a PH not by choice, but a duty. Saw cars on expressways, on a PH, when no one is supposed to go to work, not even banking, manufacturing, unless in healthcare, police.
