Maths is a compulsory subject for all 6 years. If her maths performance is poor compared to her other subjects it may pull down her overall grade. But in terms of having passion for the subject - no worries at all. Most students are only really interested in one or two subjects (e.g. Biology, Physics).

Most NUSH grads go into STEM (science, tech, engineering, math) courses. For example: biological sciences, mechanical engineering, computer science. Usually there will also be quite a handful of student aiming to study Medicine.

          Thank u \"phtthp\" too
I have a few more questions
How do u know if u r suitable for this school?
When u first start out at this school what did u think of the work?
How is the discipline of your school?
What is the school's expectations for the students?
What is the average score of each subject ?
          (Especially maths and science)
          How are the students personalities?
Do the boys and girls mix a lot?
I don't think there is a suitable \"type\" for NUS High, but being somewhat curious in math or sciences will make studying a lot more bearable. Also opportunities in the school are usually geared towards these kind of people with passion.

I will be honest here and say that during the first 2-3 years I was very overwhelmed. The pace was very fast and I didn't really put in the effort to cover gaps in my learning. They let you explore what you enjoy in year 1 and 2, but I wasn't diligent and used that time to play around. But I eventually got used to the teaching style + woke up my idea and I improved a lot in the end ๐Ÿ™‚

As Curioustudent said, discipline is quite lax compared to other schools. I do think they are getting more strict in recent years though (confiscating phones during lessons, white socks, etc.)

The school expects students be quite independent. You have to take responsibility for your own learning. If you need help you have to contact your teachers and arrange for consultation sessions. Remedial sessions are rarely enforced in the upper years.

I agree with Curioustudent here. My observations are that most people can score well for Math and score quite high for sciences. The average score for languages and humanities is generally lower (3.5-4.5 CAP).

The types of students you will meet in NUSH are just like in any other school. Some do well and some don't. Some have a lot of friends and some don't. But, personally, I do think there is a significant number of very bright people in NUS High who are deeply passionate in certain areas (usually math and science).

Girls are a minority in NUS High, so they will have to work with boys a lot of the time (for group projects, CCA etc). In the Specialisation years, some subjects have classes that have totally skewed gender ratios (I once took a module where I was the only girl in a class of 20 students). But whether you make friends with the opposite gender is really up to you. I personally chose to mix with guys as well because I wanted to get to know more people beyond the small number of girls.

          Hope this helps.

Nice to hear from people with experience.

Do u think someone is suitable if have a passion in maths and is good at it but for science not so much of a interest but still quite good.
Other than interest, how did u overcome the distance. Is the school far from your home? Also, did your parents object to u joining the school? Because my parents strongly object due to the location being like about one and a half hour away and because of the cost of school fees. Also, if u have experienced the boarding program could u give a rough idea of how it was like? Could u get along with your roommate? What CCAs are those that accept girls?

Have u encountered anyone that has transferred out of the school, kicked out or suspended because of the academic requirements. Just wanted to verify, is it true that u will get to the the whole cohort before the end of the year. How do u normally know your seniors and juniors. I heard some seniors tutor their juniors is it true? I donโ€™t have any bad intention just wanted to verify so I can try to convince my parents. When u first enter year 1 is it normal to not know anyone? Are the teachers very strict when their expectations for tests are not met? How often are tests or exams held? What are the topics learnt in Y1 & 2 for maths and science. For Y1 and Y2 what happens if u canโ€™t cope with triple science?

Sorry for so many questions! Just wanted to know which school would suit me better as I have only two schools in mind.

Last question. Is SIE held every year?

If you are good in your subjects it's not really a problem. Many students are passionate in only 1 or 2 subjects (e.g. Math or Biology). Plus you can drop a few of the subjects you don't like in the upper years.

I personally live 30mins away so I cannot really comment, but NUSH follows the MOE bursary scheme and also gives out Edusave/scholarship awards like other schools.

In boarding, 2 people share 1 room, 2 rooms share 1 bathroom. Breakfast and dinner are provided. You stay in boarding from Monday to Friday and go home on the weekends. There are shared laundry and pantry facilities. Also have gym/music room/study rooms. Occasionally there will be boarding events (usually sports and games).

I really enjoyed boarding, it was very convenient and I got to spend a lot of time with friends and got to know people better. My roommate and I got along well, though we would quarrel from time to time ๐Ÿ˜‚

CCAs that don't usually accept girls: Basketball, Badminton, Soccer, NCC, Scouts.
Everything else accepts girls. Netball CCA is girls-only.

Yes. There are some people who retain or transfer out of the school. People usually only get expelled/suspended for bad conduct.

I don't understand what you mean by \"get to the whole cohort before the end of the year\".

You usually get to know them through CCAs, house and interest groups. Yes, there is a tutoring programme for juniors run by seniors that covers all the subjects. About 2 hours per week.

It's normal to not know anyone. There is an Orientation programme for year 1s on the first day of school, it will be easy to make friends there. Plus the cohort is quite small so you will get to know everyone in your level quite fast.

Depends on what kind of teacher you have. If you do very badly most of them will usually just make you go for remedial or consultation.

Tests and graded assessments are held once every 2-3 weeks. Exams held once per semester.

Y1&2 covers mostly O level syllabus. You cannot drop anything yet in year 1 and 2, just try to do your best.

No. If all slots are filled up through DSA there will not be SIE.

Happy to answer any questions you might have. All the best in convincing your parents!

Are your bags very heavy everyday? How many textbooks do u have? Will the teacher allow u to use electronics in class for academic reasons? (E.g the teacher need the electronics for something or for writing notes during lesson ) or do u have electronics provided for teachers and students to use like in primary school (e.g iPad , laptop) what are the rules for hand phone usage other than not using during lessons ?

We do not use textbooks but rather our own school notes so it should be lighter than other schools.

Usually 1 notes for each subject with the exception of some modules having a workbook and textbook and english notes are given by topics.

Sometimes the teacher uses certain browser such as mastering physics to quiz students in class and allow them to use their phones. Usually they would not allow you to use electronics to take notes since school notes are provided and you can add on additional notes.

Year 1-2 have to put their phones in a cabinet until 1pm. I am not sure how this is done or controlled since it was implemented when I was in year 5. There is no such rule in upper years.

No electronics are provided by the school but we do have a computer lab for level-wide events.

In addition to your previous question, I live about an hour away from school and there are many people who does the same. Yes, it can be troublesome to waste about 2 hours everyday on travelling and have less time for other things you want to do but you can think of this time as a break. Usually when travelling, I read my kindle(ebook), play phone games, talk with friends or just sleep. However, the fact still remains that you have less time for your studies or hobby and it is a factor to consider when choosing your school. Choosing your school will be a long-lasting decision and you should consider carefully if you are willing to spend about 2-3 hours everyday just for travelling.
