Isn't that true - so many people balloted out of their neighbourhood schools (not just top schools) and need to travel out of their zone to go to other schools... How is this conducive? Everyone cross country travel. Just make priority by distance already.
      It's hardly true.

People who are balloted out of neighbourhood schools rarely need to travel out of their zone to go to other schools. KSP's https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/article/singapore-primary-1-registration-school-balloting-history/ (before it stopped getting updated for the last 2 years) provides a good snapshot of every estate and it shows that, there are more than enough schools to go around the neighbourhood without needing you to travel far (whether the alternatives are a popular pick or not, that's a different question). Hence, on KSP, the question always asked if you insist on balloting in Phase 2C is, do you like any of the schools in Phase 2CS? If not, you should be picking a safe option instead of balloting.

Priority by distance is convenient if you are already living next to the school you are eyeing. However, priority by distance would mean some schools would become permanent enclaves of a certain social class due to the neighbourhood it resides in. Besides, 'distance' as a concern is overrated IMHO. There are some, who stay far, but connected to the school directly via a bus or MRT ride, while others, who stay near, but require a complex navigation system in getting to school.

        Hello,

We are SC family, son was born in year 2014. Im living in Bishan Street 12. We only qualify for phase 2C:

        - Primary School < 1km:
        1. KUO CHUAN PRESBYTERIAN PRIMARY SCHOOL
        2. PEI CHUN PUBLIC SCHOOL
        3. FIRST TOA PAYOH PRIMARY SCHOOL
        4. KHENG CHENG SCHOOL
        5. GUANGYANG PRIMARY SCHOOL

        - Primary School 1-2km
        1. CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
        2. CHIJ PRIMARY (TOA PAYOH)
        3. ST. GABRIEL'S PRIMARY SCHOOL
        4. etc.

Our prefer schools will be Pei Chun Public School (most prefer), Kuo Chuan PP School (Secondary prefer), and Catholic High School (also most prefer, but unfortunately not within 1km).

Can you advice which primary will we stand a higher chance of admission and why? How would you choose the above schools and why?

        Many thanks in advance.
        1. Focus on only the schools within 1km. CHS and CHIJ TP are guaranteed balloting for SC < 1km, so no need waste time thinking about them. Besides, CHIJ TP is a girls' school :skeptical:

        2. Among the schools within 1km, GYPS and FTPPS will always have places left over for Phase 2CS. Therefore, you don't have to prioritise them.

        3. Of the 3 remaining, PCPS will definitely ballot for SC < 1km, while KCPPS and KCS will ballot for SC within 1km to 2km. Hence, you need to ask yourself whether you have the stomach for balloting and can accept GYPS or FTPPS as an option should you fail the ballot.
        - If yes, go for PCPS (most prefer).
        - Otherwise, go for KCPPS or KCS.

          Hi Floppy,

Many thanks for the advice (posted at 1am +, wow !) Really appreciate !

We will sit down and have a family discussion again on this. Looking at the past year's ballot results:
          - KCPPS at phase 2C in Year 2019 (Applied: 73, Taken: 55, % is 71%)
          - PCPS at phase 2C in Year 2019 (Applied: 64, Taken: 33, % is 51%)
          - KCS at phase 2C in Year 2019 (Applied: 129, Taken: 129, % is 100%)

KCPPS has a 20% higher chances of admission than PCPS... Other than that i also noticed all 3x schools (KCS, FTPPS and GYPS) have more than enough vacancy for phase 2C. Can let me know the good and bad of these 3 schools?

          Thank you.

            Not entirely correct.

KCPPS ballot for SC between 1km and 2km. Given that you are under 1km, you are guaranteed (100% bao jiak) a place if you choose the school.

KCS last year statistics was an outlier as the school typically does not have places left over for Phase 2CS. Best not to count on them having places this year for 2CS.

                Hi floppy,

                Your analysis is impressive.
Need your expertise too. We are SPR, living in Tampines Ave 9. I need to register P1 for my son this year in Phase 2C.

                School <1km:
                1. St. Hilda’s Primary School
                2. Poi Ching Primary School

                School 1-2km:
                3. Gongshang Primary School
                4. Junyuan Primary School
                5. Tampines Primary School
                6. Tampines North Primary School

In no doubt, we are sure that we wont be able to get into the first 2 primary schools. We are not sure

Could you advise we will have the chance for any primary schools within 1-2km? Or we have to go outside of 2km?

                Thank you so much.

                  Thanks for the compliment.

In your case, you are right that you have no chance for the first two and you can include no chance for Gongshang as well.

Junyuan and Tampines typically require ballotIng for PR. The important factor that you have to consider is balloting for which distance. If it’s < 1km this year, you’re out. FYI, Junyuan ballots for PR < 1km last year while Tampines ballots for PR between 1km and 2km. It could probably be the same this year. Tampines North will have spaces left over for Phase 2CS and most likely, Phase 3 as well.

For PR, I would advocate avoidance of balloting in Phase 2C as places are usually limited in Phase 2CS and given that SC has absolute priority, PR can be severely handicapped. However, given that Tampines North will usually have plenty of places left, you can consider:
                  1. Ballot for a place in Tampines (or Junyuan, but Junyuan will require active monitoring - not for the faint hearted) In Phase 2C
                  2. Failing which, apply for a place in Tampines North in Phase 2CS

Just curious, for those who registered their kids in alumni phase 2A and then decided to withdraw later to try another school at 2C, how are these seats given back to the school? Say 3 withdrew… then how to divide them between 2B and 2C of the former school?

Many thanks for your quick response, floppy.

I am really lost, while initially was thinking of Changkat Primary School, coz i stayed just nearby before i moved. But since there is a cap introduced, the chance is pretty slim for SPR staying >2km.

Hi, I need some advice here. My daughter is a Singaporean but she only eligible to register in phase 2C.

Here is the schools nearby where we stay

                        - Schools within 1km:
                        1. East Spring Primary school

                        - Schools between 1-2km
                        1. Angsana primary school
                        2. Chong Zheng primary school
                        3. Gong Shang primary school
                        4. Pasir Ris primary school
                        5. White Sands primary school
                        6. Yumin Primary school

I don’t really prefer East Spring so I am thinking to choose among - Chong Zheng, Gong Shang, Pasir Ris or White Sands. But i guess these schools would require ballot even for SC between 1-2km, am I right? Can anyone advise which school we stand higher chance of admission during phase 2C? Thank you in advance.
