2020 P1 Registration Exercise for 2021 In-take

I’m registering my youngest at CHIJ Katong Primary. My elder daughter graduated from there back in 2018 and she loved it there. I can see that the school environment is nurturing and the girls were happy.

Thanks floppy!
Game theory is great as a thought experiment. It’s about rationality given a set of conditions, considerations etc. Unfortunately, game theory doesn’t take into account all factors and where considerations may differ from person to person. I’m quite sure John Nash didn’t think of SC as kiasu, kiasi, kiabor and kiazhenghu (those words will probably never be uttered in any scholarly material) when Game Theory was being formulated.F3parent\" post_id=\"1979688\" time=\"1591377802\" user_id=\"165232:
I respect your insights on the primary school balloting, thanks for that...
but why do you think parents will be less gung ho? In my opinion, it's somewhat like game theory and the prisoners dilemma, both parties will try to rat out the other thinking they have the better chance to go free (meaning try to one-up the other in choosing the better school, resulting in higher applications for the better schools)
The problem with game theory here is “maximizing the returns for an individual”. It’s ok for an economic model where profits are the ultimate goals for all participants. Where game theory breaks down is when we start to have different motivating factors. Here, some wants < 1km, some wants a particular school, others want accessibility, some chooses a school because that’s the only one they heard of.
Why is Kiasu and kiasi important? Because for P1 selection, it can be a binary choice - all or nothing. It’s not just some lost or gain, it’s either you get it or you end up in Phase 2CS. That single factor will force many people to seek safer harbors given that being less gung-ho is a better option than balloting and failing. Singaporeans are not the “live fast, die young” kind; they prefer “uneventful but live to a ripe old age”.
I like the way you put it
can't argue with the unique kiasu, kiasi, kiabor and kiazhenghu us singaporeans have
it has been shown to test even the most solid economic theories
p.s-any relation to the floppy from vr-zone? if so I think i bought a motherboard from you like 15 years ago :imcool: -
Hi All,
I stay in Hillview area with my SC eldest boy born in 2014 that going to take part in the P1 registration exercise this year . Only eligible for Phase 2C this year.
The following are the schools nearby to my current place :
Within 1KM:
CHIJ Lady Queen of Peace ( not applicable as mine is a boy )
1-2 KM:
BUkit Panjang PS
BUkit View
Dazhong
Keming
Lian Hua PS
St Anthony PS
Looking at the 1-2 km list , no chance for Keming . May consider St Anthony but not sure the risk. Not familiar with the rest of schools in this list. Appreciate any master can give some advice.
Another thought is to move near Bukit Timah , and bid for Pei Hwa Primary ( most prefer ) and have BTPS as back up in 2CS if failed. Any advise whether this worth the trying ?
Thanks all the master or grand master for any of your advice in advance .
Cheers. -
Isn’t the timing a bit too tight for u to attend viewings, finish the paperwork, move house & update NRIC address?
-
Yes. Already started the process of rental sourcing for a place in Bukit Timah that <1KM to PHPS and BTPS.
Just wondering how high is the chance getting in PHPS for SC <1KM based on your view ? If the odd too Low, i might well to apply for BTPS for phase 2C under SC >2km using my current address in Hillview and don’t even need to move. Will the latter work too ?
Any opinion or input from all the masters are much appreciated. -
PHPS always ballots for <1km every year. I don’t know the exact odds, but maybe Davischew has some records?
I recall that PHPS has a very big cohort, nearly 300 student intake per year? Yet still must ballot. The only advantage is probably its delay to single session. So the P1P2s will go to school in the afternoons instead of morning. Good if you have a very late riser.
However I have heard several mums say that their boys not coping well academically at PHPS. I have seen their exam papers, always very tough. Consider whether your boy can survive under this type of pressure. -
Just a suggestion: since u are willing to pay Bukit Timah kind of rental prices, may I suggest you consider instead, a rental place that is <1km of SJI Junior? No need balloting at all, confirmed place.
Your boy can enjoy affiliation to 2 secondary schools (SJI and St Patrick’s), plus a relatively more relaxed academic pace, can walk to school, and you have United Square shopping mall opposite for all your groceries/enrichment needs. Novena MRT within walking distance, if you work in CBD it’s also a straight drive down via Rochor Road. -

I’m not sure how much you want to spend but if you are going to spend, you want something that’s guaranteed. SC < 1km will only get you a chance to ballot in PHPS. If you failed at the ballot, it’s really 赔了夫人又折兵

Heed zac’s mum suggestion, a school < 1km from SJI is a much better option. -
Probably RL911 still wants to be near hillview area and prefer a mixed school. Some years PHPS have good chance for <1km or no ballot so might worth a try. Rental not so much commitment as buying so probably good to give a shot.
