My sensing is that besides favouring non-RI/ HCI Jcs, YLL is looking for a certain kind of personality, ie those who will make good General Practitioners eg those who are relaxed/ cheerful and can connect well with people and not so much the academic types. As for LKC, I am surprised that those with high BMATs were not offered a place. It could be that their MMI did not go well.

There were only 2 stations this year for YLL. No SJT. One station to talk about yourself and another ethnic station. I honestly do not see how that single interviewer could sieve out the personality and motivation of a student based on a less than 10 mins interview. LKC has 5 stations this year with 5 interviewers. Very fast moving and much more challenging than YLL. Bmat is not merely an academic test. It tests the natural abilities of the kids too.

Yup, quite a few very impressive RI kids with straight As, h3 distinctions, high Bmat, impressive cca leaderships, research, olympaid winners, did not get any offer this year. They have very nice personalities too. Think they took up other scholarships in the end. I am sure these other scholarship interviews also look for excellent personalities and leadership qualities... That's why I said, all tee kiam tee kiam 🙂 ... Selection committee has the final say and u do not know what they look out for.

It is possible that these are the very types of profiles (excepting very nice personalities) that YLL does not want. Maybe they don't fit what they perceive as those who will make good GPs. Too ambitious perhaps? But I agree that with so many shortlisted candidates, there will be a certain degree of tee kiam involved.

The system of selection even though has been diversified, it is still not picking up the best of the crops. Many potential applicants that can truly be good doctors have been left out by such a system.

I still feel that the system should be fine tune so that when an applicant that has applied for both medicine school and got offered by both schools, should only be allowed for one acceptance of the school that offered them. Take away the practise of wait-lists that I see promote duplication of offering and a waste of time and resources. Since an applicant that want to study medicine should be glad and grateful to accept the offer from either school. The duplicate offer cause havoc, chaos and bottleneck of those in the queue.

The inspiration to study medicine start from childhood and during their JC, POLYTECHNIC or ITE. Besides good academic and other excellent credentials, the medicine schools should also look at those exemplary applicants who have been working hard in the background silently voluntarily helping the weak and needy and were unable to present it in their application due to a gap in the transition in time and period of the application that taken place. Such important qualities of the applicants should not be missed out in the process of the selection interviews.

Well, it's not the end for those credible students who did not make it to study medicine. With their courage, love, compassion and dedication, surely they can truly be great and successful in whatever they do.[/quote]
The current selection process will never be able to pick up all the best of the crop but who is \"best\" in their eyes may also not necessarily be who we think. It is true that there will be many that can truly be good doctors who are left out but maybe they think the cost of refining the selection outweighs the benefit.

If anything, as you said, those armed with good qualities and credentials will still be able to find success and happiness in other fields. It is also good for everybody to spread such talent around and not just in medicine lah. :celebrate:

Who are you addressing TurtleSoup? Some of us are only doing a post mortem of the application outcome.

Update: I didn't realise. My bad.

I agreed that they want to spread talents across different industries. Do not want all top brains in medicine and law.

The selection process is influenced by government policies.

                    Hi! Kibblesmoke,
Hv your DD gotten the outcome yet?
Your DD should be getting hers soon. My son wait was over just last week, I believed the remaining few in this coming wait-lists outcome should be final. All the best!

I would rather look at it positively as sharing information among parents 🙂

Desmond, did your son get an offer from Duke NUS with a direct pathway to their medical pgm? My girl said her friend took the NTU-Duke-NUS medicine pathway and rejected Imperial & UCL. Another girl took the SUTD- Duke-NUS special track.
