    how to improve reading & recognisation of words

      Hi All,


      My girl is in K1 this yr @ Kinderland Kindergarten. During the last parent teacher mtg, was told by both Eng & Chinese teacher that she cant read much (cannot recognise most words). Did reading at home with her and realised she has been memorising the book more than really reading the words… tried talking to my girl and she mentioned tat teacher is too fierce and she is scare taht she might read wrongly so she jus tell teacher she dunno… sigh…

      i tried reading with her and realise she dun have much confidence in to read on her own and her attention span on reading is very short (esp when im testing her)

      need advice on how can i help her to improve in order not to be lag behind for the up coming new sch term… i was told by my fren to sign her up for the I can read programme and she waiting to be assessed next week… any other parents with similar experience to advice? tks

        My little experience says that this has no instant cure. Your girl could be not confident in speaking out, and she may not be reading regularly.

        If you are willing to come up with the effort, and have the time to do this. For now, i would say, set aside time to read to her EVERYDAY…at least 10-15min. Visit the thread on Teaching Phonics at home and go to Tamarind’s blog. She has really excellent stuff on how to teach your child phonics.

        Please do not test her just yet. It will only put her off reading if she feels stressed by the experience.

        When she is happier touching books, maybe you can purposely read a few words wrongly (my son will instantly correct me) to see if she’s following you. For chinese reading, I will test my son to see if he’s following me by stopping suddenly and asking him to read a line from where I stop. But honestly, the testing bit is quite put off.

          I have been reading with her for at least 1/2 hr daily since last week to build up her interest in reading. Will read up the thread u mentioned too...

            Based on your post, seems like she has problem with individual word recognition? She’s memorising the story instead of reading the words.


            Try using flashcards. You can jumble them up. You can ask her to form sentences with the words too.

            I’m doing that with my boy and he enjoys it. We do have some ready made cards (some are custom ordered, some from school, some from Popular) and we have alot of home made cards. He gets to draw on the home made cards (usually he wants to write the word out himself).

            Using different colours for multi-syllable words also help to break up the words for them to read. I use different colours to break up by phonics (e.g. ‘p’ in red, ‘in’ in blue).

              Hi,

              You may like to try graded readers from Ladybird. Since your child is in K1 like mine, you may like to start off with Level 1 readers like Little Red Hen, The Magic Porridge Pot and so on. These books contain simple sentences, and repeated phrases, making them suitable for beginner readers. You can find them from Popular.

              Dr Seuss books are also good in that it helps to expand the child's vocabulary, e.g. The Hair Book, The Eye Book and so on. These books contain nice and clear illustrations that will not only attract the children's attention but to also aid their understanding of the content. You can find these from Harris.

              I can see improvement in my girl's reading skills after she is exposed to these story books 🙂

                Like most parents here, i used Ladybird Peter & Jane series to teach my girl recognise sight words and to read. I started last year when she was in K1 and almost illiterate. Now she is able to recognise frequently-used words and read assessment books instructions on her own to do her homework 🙂 Thumbs up for Peter & Jane series for me 🙂
