Hi parents,
I have always wanted to ask how to revise test/exam for humanities subject ? I realized that for past year exam papers, all key answers were attached for Math, Science & HCL; but not humanities subjects. Personally, for Geo & IH, I thought the school should be able to attached with key answers or even suggested responses, so that it is easy for our dd to practice past year papers, mark & clarify doubts with teachers. I thought suggested response should be able to upload in the portal for students to follow the school's marking scheme better, rather than \"learn the mistake\" from tests/exam. Understand this has been practiced for the past years,but I think this is one of the lacking academic support from the school. My dd find it more challenging to prepare for humanities' subject compared with other subjects. What did y'all think? For those who have been through & survived, how did y'all prepare for these subjects with your dd? Need expertise advice urgently. 😭😧😓 -

it really depends on the standard of your school exam papers? if they're easy, then they're not an accurate reflection of how you would do more challenging papers, say past year psle papers. you stand a chance, but taking in mind that you're still under the current t-score system where usually the t-score for non-affiliated is 264, and to minimally get a 260+, you'd need 3 a*s and also taking in mind that ca1 is considerably much easier than the actual paper, unless for prelims you still could maintain such a score, you have a fair chance of possibly doing well enough to get into nygh

the best chance for you is to put effort into your final round of revision and challenge yourself with other school papers, then try to aim for a 262? then +2 from higher chinese, get 264 (unless cop change but highly unlikely i've never heard nygh cop become 265), then perhaps you have a chance.

You will be able to choose the schools you want once the results are out. There is no need to guess and think about all the what-ifs and there's really no decision to be made as well at this moment.
Once you get the PSLE T-scores, you will have a better gauge of where you stand in terms of chances of entering the different schools. All the best in your exams! -

Yup, dd’s time - the ones that came with the answers for these past year exam papers were for maths, sciences and higher chinese.
Looks like it hasn’t changed since then.
For my dd, those covered 6 of the subjects that she was taking.
The other 2 subjects were IH and LA.
She didn’t focus much on the humanity subject, so what she knows will be limited.
She says she hasn’t done any of the school’s past year papers for IH.
What she can remember is that for IH written exams, details on syllabus to be tested for that particular exam and the reading lists will be given to them, so she uses that for revision.
It should be either in the email or iTunes U.
She did go for like 2 or 3 sessions of consultation with her IH teacher in Sec 4.
She remembers having to re-draft the answers for the practice given in class and submit it again at the next consultation for her teacher’s comments.
Basically, whatever point or stand they make, it has to be explained and supported with evidence/examples and linked back to the question something like that?
The reading lists should provide the contents that they need to know about the topic being tested on and they should have had some discussions in the class as well.
They were given timed trial (practice paper) to do before the exam, just like all the other subjects, and that’s all the paper she did for IH.
For LA, it was her Sec 4 classmate who started doing up the school’s past year papers.
(Dd’s time - Languages had a higher weightage in Upper Sec)
Her LA teacher told the girls those who are interested can also sign up and join in the session.
He booked a room in the library to cater to the group.
Her LA teacher did not mark their scripts individually, he went through the answers just like the practice papers they did in class but dd had the chance to clarify if her answers for the comprehension passages are acceptable as hers are not worded the same as the given ones.
They did not do paper 1 for these sessions but her LA teacher did tell the class that if they want to attempt the past year essay questions, he can mark it.
Dd didn’t attempt any.
I guess if your dd is keen and able to do the school’s past year papers in the student portal, she can still carry on to do it even if they are the ones that did not come with the answers and approach her teachers for them to be marked or book a consultation session either individually or as a group.

Like to understand, do you mean for upper Sec, LA is still comprising of both English and literature, just like on lower Sec? My y1 girl says she heard from her science teacher that it is possible to drop literature in upper Sec. If LA is still considered one subject, it means they only need to choose geo or history as the other humanities?

Literature is a separate humanities subject. So if your daughter doesnt want to take it as a separate subject, she does not need to choose Literature. She also does not need to choose Geo/ Hist. IH is a humanities subject in itself and can be used in the L2R5. In that case, the 8-subject combo will be 3 Sciences, 2 Languages, 2 Maths, 1 IH. -

Just to add on for clarity... the compulsory subjects are: LA, HCL, IH, IM1, IM2, Chem.
We just attended the Y2 talk for Y3 subject combo.
Literature is a separate humanities subject. So if your daughter doesnt want to take it as a separate subject, she does not need to choose Literature. She also does not need to choose Geo/ Hist. IH is a humanities subject in itself and can be used in the L2R5. In that case, the 8-subject combo will be 3 Sciences, 2 Languages, 2 Maths, 1 IH.
Your daughter can choose other subjects to make up the remaining subjects for an 8-10 subject combo. Choices include 3rd lang, Lit, Chinese Lit, Geo, Hist, Bio, Physics, AEP, MEP.
9-10 subject combos & advanced subjects are subject to school approval based on MSG requirements.
