I would like to seek professional advices/opinions if online piano lessons are good for young children aged 6 years old in the long term.

My child has been learning with an online teacher for 11 months, and I’m wondering if it’s time to go back to physical lessons due to a few reasons:

1. Lack of public performances exposure
2. Beginning to see child’s weakness in foundation as she plays more technically challenging pieces.

Yes she has learnt 11 months of online lessons and she doesn’t really have any issue following the lessons. Her online teacher focuses more musicality and I think she’s lacking in foundation and techniques.

What is covered in a typical piano lesson will depend on what are the learning goals. But at beginning and lower grades there should be a healthy mix of technical study, sight-reading, repertoire, and basic theory. I think when we say a person has a good foundation, they should have good playing posture, reading skills appropriate to their grade levels, good sense of rhythm, and tension free technique.

Yes, lessons have been ongoing for 3-4 months and only go through pieces completely, I would definitely feedback to teacher. It is good to discuss with the teacher first, she might have a good reason to focus only on the repertoire.

The student is turning 6 years old.

If the child is this young, it’s more impt to develop her appreciation and interest in music.

Is she attentive during piano lesson, able to sit through?
Is she practising through the hw that her piano tr assigned her? On her own?
When she practises her pieces, she is already sight reading, as long as you are not writing the solfege or notes down for her. No need to make any marking on the keyboard too.
Or is she playing by memory? You can tell, if she can play new pieces on her own.

Does your child enjoy the lessons, looking forward to it weekly? Is making music now, making her happy?
One of mine started at 4yo but in a group. No formal theory thought then. But my child learn to play the new pieces on her own, ahead of the lessons. Even so, we switched to 1 to 1 lessons only when she is 7yo.

Theory can be picked up as you learn. Tr explain the new terms as and when they come across them.

My other child started piano lesson only at 7yo. He is doing well now, enjoy making his music.

Some music school lessons allocate last 15mins to theory using theory book. But min age to take their 1 to 1 lesson is 6yo onwards.
Like Dream aurora said, talk to your current tr, hear her out first.
