Montessori environment could allow her to learn at her own pace. It also allows room for circle time that spans across all the age groups, 3-6 years old. In that way the older kids sort of provide a positive example peer teaching/demonstration Eg during show & tell when they are more articulate than the 3 year olds. Your girl may benefit from this type of learning, especially if she is developmentally more advanced than her own age group.

The limiting thing about PCF is they rely on mass group instruction, and they cannot cater to individual students who are too far from the norm.

If you are worried about local primary school, where there are 30 kids per class and all having to conform to mass group instruction…then you have to weigh, 2 years (K1 and K2) of the same mass group instruction, versus 2 years of possibly more customized & targeted approach for your child’s learning & growth.

To put some perspective, yes it’s only 2 years but developmentally, I believe early childhood studies would tell you that ages 5-6 are the most critical years when the brain development is at the most “sponge-like” stage for absorbing academic and other skills that will benefit the child for the next 10 years of her life.

K1 is the age when most preschools will introduce phonics and handwriting/counting skills. If your girl can already read very well (not sure what kind of giftedness she has)…then she will be absolutely bored and stagnate at her current school.

        Dear Zac’s Mum,

Thank you for sharing your perspective.
        Greatly appreciate it.

As of now, she is constantly curious & can now independently read English books for around 6 - 9 years old. Her fine motor skills & Chinese is a little behind though.

Do you have any true Montessori schools to recommend? I stay in the West. If you know of any parental support group that can share tips on how to support gifted kids, that will be great as well.

        Thank you very much.

Montessori is great for building fine motor skills! That would give her a better foundation for Pre-writing muscular development.

(If you follow the typical PCF class, then she would be “overqualified” in reading/phonics while being disadvantaged/frustrated when they start penmanship drills in K1.)

Try to find one where they incorporate a good Chinese program as well. Sorry I don’t know the latest kindergartens available as my DS graduated from kindy many years ago.

Friend’s son attended Early Years Montessori in Sunset Way many year ago, it’s a small preschool in a landed estate, class ratio is good & teachers relatively caring (if they’re still around)…you may want to arrange a trial or holiday camp program with them to assess for yourself.
