Swc, actually for some subjects yes.. for LA specifically it was put up much later. It was a bit of messy in instructions and the teacher actually ask them to do the papers in class but never return them before exam eg lit response. I am not sure if its just my girl's teacher. Anyway was a little disappointed with the way the school runs. After appointment with her Geo teacher in term 2, she doesnt feel her question was answered. Maybe my girl still didnt grasp the technique.of answering from the teacher. Other little things like PTM was cancelled on account the issue on ipad.is to be updated but I feel.its good to.discuss about other items on the plate of any and keep.parents.connected. I do agree with Ganchiongspider that hcl.math and science teachers are much better and my dd fav subjects. The quality of teaching affects the students interest in the subjects. Just feel the communication is not there somehow, hope . its just sec 1 and not the whole dept is like that. I.was expecting more from a top school perhaps.
I agree that the communication is not really there. It does seem like the school expects a lot of independence from the students, especially in the lower sec humanities & LA. I was also surprised they hardly write any essays - think they wrote maybe 1-2 in the whole year but then the EOY exams had the usual Papers 1-3 format. Same for Lit Response - not really taught a lot in class until near the exams but then it is tested. I am all for exploring literature and doing storytelling/ presentations as these are important soft-skills, but I'd be more comfortable if they are prepared a little more for what is actually being tested at the EOYs.

But having said that, I also just monitor and advise my gal to consult the teachers where needed (don't think she did any this year though) and pay attention in class. I didn't call the teachers or school as she still managed so far. Will see what happens in Sec 3 but I think it will probably need even more \"independence\" from the girls.

Thanks for sharing, will take note and monitor her progress. As this is a unique year, we arent sure if the assignments are replacing some written work due to C19 hence less emphasis on answering techiques too. Your girls did well without help.. will ask mine to do some reading during the holidays.
It was the same for my daughter's sec 1 last year... so no, the assignment work stuff is not really much different in a non-covid year.

Zappy…thanks for sharing, will take note and feedback again next year as needed. I would encourage independence too but some things takes time to grow.

I agree with Zappy. Since sec sch, I hv been quite hands-off as I expected my girls to grow in independence and be resourceful. However if there are tell-tale signs that they are not coping, I will probe and find out more (yes my girls fail geog or hist b4). They normally know its bc they misinterpreted the qn or not following teacher recommendations of using PEEL analysis. As long as they are on top of things, I typically let it slide. Grades are to me, not as impt as the learning process.

No worries. I feel that as long as they meet the cop of the sch and put in the effort and pay attention in class, typically they can cope.

I think the leap from P6 to sec 1 is huge. Pri school they are used to being tested on things they had a fair bit of practice in class already. But suddenly in sec 1, the things they do in class seems radically different from what they are tested in EOY (especially true for LA and Humanities). For my side, there was a lot of stress going into the first EOY as she din really know what to expect. But come sec 2, DD was a lot calmer and also seemed much better at translating the skills they learned through the activities they do in class to applying them for EOY. So I would say not to worry too much. And do approach the teachers for help. That is also one difference I saw in DD. She was much more comfortable in approaching teachers for help. Sher would also spend time to prepare for the consultation sessions so that she could make best use of those consultation sessions. So it is a learning process but I am glad to see her blossoming to become a much more independent learner.

🙏thanks for sharing, must ask her to prepare for future consultation to make the best of things and hopefully things improve in Sec 2.

I went to take a look at dd’s upper Sec files that is still sitting in the cupboard.

From what I can see, they are given assessment plan for LA and it is likely done at beginning of the academic year, looking at where it is being filed.

It will give details on what will be assessed each term, when it will take place and what will be covered in each assessment and its marks/weightage.
She has it for both the sec 3/4 years, I believe she should have them for the lower sec too.

It could be given in the email or iTunesU , the student can make use of it to know what’s coming and plan for them in advance.

For the school’s past year exam papers, think it is uploaded by the library dept as the girls had to put in their requests via email back when the then new portal which they migrated to wasn’t up yet.
The most recent paper (like 2019 paper for the 2020 batch) may have to wait but the earlier years should be uploaded much earlier.
If it is not, it could be a slip up and the person in charge may not be aware until he gets the feedback.
Maybe can send an email to the school to enquire if u encounter it in the future?

                        Hi all

Glad that this forum allows parents to voice about our concerns. I will definitely encourage my girl to consult the teachers for questions that she doesn’t understand and not afraid to speak up. Even in the report book, teacher commented that she is too quiet. I don’t even know she is ok or not ok
