Is it true that all children made it to GEP program attended enrichment classes one way or another?

      1. attended English, Math tuition classes?
      2. attended Olympiad classes?
      3. attended GEP preparation program be it private tutor or institution?
      4. attended GEP camp?

Is it possible that an ordinary child who had never been exposed to the above specific trainings and tuitions eventually being selected for the program?

Is it possible that a child being selected for GEP program, if he or she had never attended any tuition classes (even for the mainstream syllabus). Are there any success cases out there especially the child is a self learning child with basic parents guidance since P1 to P3 (the child read widely) but never attended any tuition in his /her life?

Is it true that the tuitions and enrichments will continue and expand as a necessity during the 3 years GEP program?

Parents with GEP children feedback are much appreciated. thank you![/quote]
I know of at least 4 students who had never attended tuition, olympiad training or GEP prep.

And not only they were in GEP programme, 2 of them have sibling who were in GEP programme as well. Three of them have big families so tuition were not possible.

Their PSLE scores were between 255 and 271. Nothing stellar but still managed to get into good secondary schools. (Some through DSA)

Having said that, most students (70% to 80%) do have tuition for at least one subject. Chinese being the most common.

Thank you GTGT - the students you mentioned must be genius.

With zero tuition, what are the practices and exposures the students did at home?

In my view, it is almost impossible for an adult to manage the GEP screening test papers within the given time if it is
first time expose to those questions.

What are the common habits, characteristics the GEP students have by nature ?

Started exploring Math Olympiad classes a few weeks back (3 lessons so far) and realised that most have been doing it for at least a year or more. So it’s definitely possible to get in without enrichment but I get what smelly socks mean about many having the benefit of such exposure to give themselves an edge in the Gep test.

Reading the forum comments is actually quite stressful - with talk on having to take on enrichment classes to keep up and prepping for MS syllabus on the side. Where does that leave the child - do the kids get time to unwind and be happy?

              Pokemon 2011 - congrats!

Any tips on what did you do with your child at home in the preparation, probably not intentional preparation but certain habits or parents education which you think it helps indirectly?

The 4 students I mentioned read a lot of books not in PSLE syllabus. One mummy told me her son like to read his older sibling's secondary school Science textbook. I was told another one like to read science-friction books.

Congrats to your DC of getting GEP. Well, mine DD also selected for GEP this year and we have never sent her to any enrichment classes/tuition. We also never expose her to any possible types of GEP questions not even MO type of questions. Hence, we are also quite worried whether she will be able to make it if we enroll her into GEP. As of now, she does not wish to change school and is contented to be where she is (a very normal neighborhood school), but her form teacher advised us to let her take up this offer as she will be well stretched.

I have read quite a few posts on GEP experiences and most of the stories are quite depressing, so I am hoping that we will have a better understanding after tmr's briefing. No matter what, a kid's well being and mental health is also very important to us.

Any of the current GEP kids have problem coping with English. How do you help them? I foresee my kid having issues with English once he joins the programme.
Earlier, I think someone asked a similar question like the boy is good in maths/Sc and wondered if he could cope with English in Gep.

I recall my daughter was the other way round, good in languages but not so in maths/Sc. 😆 She wasn’t even the top 3 in her class when she got selected.

Not all who get selected are all-rounders. Many are very good in either Maths or English. Since the kid can pass 2 rounds of tests, that means their Eng/Maths standard can’t be too far off. So you don’t worry. My DD didn’t do well in P4, took 1 year to adapt. Overall, she finds Eng and Maths manageable but had problems w Sc, 😂

Don’t really have tips. He just reads a lot since young. I’m constantly trying to find appropriate books (his type of genre/ not scary/ sufficiently thick so as not to waste my $ and effort) to feed his reading habits.

On your comment about adults having problems with GEP test themselves let alone 9-year old kids. I’m the same, I can’t figure out the logic of some of the questions but they have their own way of working things out, e.g. a few days ago he told me that the difference of the squares of two consecutive numbers is the sum of the two numbers. I asked him whose method is that, he said he came up with it on his own. Don’t know if it’s true but it seems to work 🤷🏻‍♀️

His school had a MO competition open to all P3s this year and he did quite well for it despite not having any training. That’s why I went to look up MO classes but his standard is considered very low compared to the students he’s joining now.

The week before Round 2, he asked me what are GA questions, and I remembered the KSP forum having some references on sample questions, so I asked him whether he would like me to look for examples to show him and he said ‘no, you said cannot prepare for it remember and that it doesn’t matter whether I get in or not’ - which was what I said but secretly I was hoping he gets in lah!

So while I was hoping he gets in and was getting quite frenzied waiting for the release of round 2 results, I didn’t want him to get in through prepping and suffer in the programme. As it is, Im trying to prep him emotionally that his results would drop and not to compare with his friends. Parents’ expectations aside, these kids also expect a lot of themselves.

All the best and hope your DD changes her mind. We spent last weekend convincing DC and he seems ok with it now.
