Any of the current GEP kids have problem coping with English. How do you help them? I foresee my kid having issues with English once he joins the programme.

Earlier, I think someone asked a similar question like the boy is good in maths/Sc and wondered if he could cope with English in Gep.

I recall my daughter was the other way round, good in languages but not so in maths/Sc. 😆 She wasn’t even the top 3 in her class when she got selected.

Not all who get selected are all-rounders. Many are very good in either Maths or English. Since the kid can pass 2 rounds of tests, that means their Eng/Maths standard can’t be too far off. So you don’t worry. My DD didn’t do well in P4, took 1 year to adapt. Overall, she finds Eng and Maths manageable but had problems w Sc, 😂

DC might be in the same as your DD - English stronger and Math not as strongly comparatively. He found Round 2 English paper to be the easiest amongst the 4 papers and Math the hardest while most others said the reverse. 😅

        Hi existing GEP parents,

My daughter has been offered to do GEP, I have been trying to digest the news over the weekend as it came totally unexpected. While she has been going for English and Math enrichment, it was not my intention to prepare her for the GEP screening/selection tests.

I have read up on the GEP program but still confused on the key project works that they need to do over the next 3 years, therefore would appreciate your advice.

In P4, this is a transition year so no project work but focus on developing the inquiry skills? Any example what will be done?

This link explains quite clearly. https://beta.moe.gov.sg/programmes/gifted-education/individualised-study-options/

English have the heaviest workload throughout P4-6, look under Portfolio Assessment which has the largest assessment weightage.

        https://nanhuapri.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u732/Others/E-Notification/P4GEP/2017/MTP%202017%20P4%20%28GEP%29%20EL.pdf

        https://nanhuapri.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u732/Others/E-Notification/P5%20GEP/MTP%202016%20P5%20%28GEP%29%20EL.pdf

Maths and Science are manageable, except if you are interested in Maths Olympiads (P4-6) and selected for Science Olympiads (P5).

Maths and Science Masterclass selection tests are done in end P4 or early P5, where selected students attend a series of classes in NUSH.

In P5, focus on the ISO project - it can IRS or IvP or school based projects. This is the one major project that they need to focus and complete over 8-10 months. Is my understanding correct?

        IRS/IvP/FPS/DI

some are shorter as they are completed earlier by June, while IRS last till November IRS Exhibition.

Social studies - This will be a graded subject in GEP but not examinable in PSLE. Correct?

        Correct.

Exam preparation- Unlike MS where past years exam papers and assessment books are easily available, how do you support your child in their exam preparation?
I suppose the parents will have no access to those past years P4/P5 GEP exam papers that were set by MOE.
For P6 exam, they will doing school based exam as per MS students right?

The syllabus are usually completed 2-3 weeks ahead of each CA/SA, and the students are given many past year GEP papers (for the same CA/SAs in the past years as the topics covered are similar) to practise.

Appreciate any info/advice from existing GEP parents. Thank you in advance.
Is it true that all children made it to GEP program attended enrichment classes one way or another?

          1. attended English, Math tuition classes?
          2. attended Olympiad classes?
          3. attended GEP preparation program be it private tutor or institution?
          4. attended GEP camp?

Is it possible that an ordinary child who had never been exposed to the above specific trainings and tuitions eventually being selected for the program?

Is it possible that a child being selected for GEP program, if he or she had never attended any tuition classes (even for the mainstream syllabus). Are there any success cases out there especially the child is a self learning child with basic parents guidance since P1 to P3 (the child read widely) but never attended any tuition in his /her life?

Is it true that the tuitions and enrichments will continue and expand as a necessity during the 3 years GEP program?

Parents with GEP children feedback are much appreciated. thank you!
Hi Smelly Socks,

My DS is selected for GEP 2021, he only has Chinese tuition since P1 because both myself & my wife don't speak Chinese. However, I bought Math Olympiad book from Popular prior to the test to let him have some exposure of MO kind of questions. He never attended any Math, Eng, Sci tuitions or GEP prep/camp at all. His P1-P3 marks are relatively good but not topping the class/cohort. The form teacher's comment, he is always focus in class and able to complete his school work / homework independently.

English is his weakness, he doesn't really read and has limited phrases / vocabularies. I was thinking that he won't pass Round 2 because of the English, and he indeed said English test was the hardest. So we are kind of surprise that he gets selected and now we are worried of how he will survive higher English standard in GEP :frustrated:

Hi angga888 - thanks for the insights.

Do you have to coach DS on the Math Olympiad concepts or she could just manage them herself naturally without much guidance? == which is the genius.

How about English? i heard the common GEP characteristic is they read widely. I just wonder how does the child copes with Round 2 difficult cloze passages, vocab and English GA if not reading enough? looks like the sky is the limit and how much is considered enough…

            again thanks for all tips.

              Hi Smelly Socks,

I only helped him to check his MO answers to the answer sheet (last pages of the book). He has good logical & reasoning and math inclined. He naturally can solve Math problems using his own intuition. When he can't answer a problem, most likely I also can't answer it 😆 so answer sheet is the solution 🙂

GEP Round 2 has 4 tests: English, Math, GA1, GA2. Even though he said English was difficult but he was quite confident with Math, GA1, GA2 tests. GA1 is not fully English, but a mix of common logic and patterns.
For the English test alone, he told me that he used reduction method (eliminating the obvious wrong options) and with the few remaining ones, choose/guess the best answer, probably he was lucky too 😄

Hi angga888 - Your child is definitely a real born genius. She is the exact type of student MOE is filtering for. I always doubtful how could a p3 child manages such difficult screening test without any preparation and exposure before the test. No way for an ordinary adult to make it… It all boils down to smart and intelligent guess work to response to difficult situations and problems solving skill. I don’t believe there is luck element into it.

I guess the next question is if there is a connection with the GEP child n he/hers super smart parents. The gifted genes running in the family will make the success chance higher. Are there any success cases which parents are not really gifted?

My child definitely has no potential. He needs a few rounds of explanation before comprehend the concept especially in MO.

Given the heavy school work and the adjustment

in transition year, is it possible for DC to also manage this on top of heavy CCA/sports commitment like trainining at least 9 hours a week? Also, what are the options if the GEP centres dont have the CCA? Do they allow the DC to participate NSG and external competitions?

P4 is a transition year so the kids may take some time to get used to. But definitely able to train 9 hours per week with good time management. And yes, if the school does not offer the cca, you can still join NSG on an individual level. They will include all these into the report book.

It should be doable with careful time management and parental support. Have to be mindful that DC will be spending more time on homework and also might potentially need more ‘practice’ where previously not needed.

External comps etc - should check with the schools you are applying to.
