I am trying to clarify some assumptions. I have heard people saying that academically better students tend to opt for IP than O levels, not singling out the actual competence of an individual but as an IP or O levels cohort for a year. Pardon my ignorance, but I am getting the impression that MOE is giving a similar impression. We have a sizable number of students who have taken :
(a) O levels and gone with JAE for a JC
(b) IP and gone into the same JC
whether they are schools with dual track programs or otherwise. (The same inference can be extended to those who took O levels and IP and went for Poly).
A levels is not everything (without having enough context on what learning is about) but many O levels and IP students inevitably end up in JCs.
While there's some talk that IP students have 'advanced learning' during Yrs 1-4, I have not seen concrete evidence to suggest IP students do better than O level students at A levels (not necessarily the affiliated JC that the IP student came from) all these years, or did I miss something ?
As for independent learning in IP, what exactly do we mean in IP environments by examples ? Independent learning of A level syllabus ? Independent learning for things not related to textbooks ? Independent of anything under the sun that the school does not object ?
Any advice is appreciated.

IP curriculum differs across IP schools. Are you referring to IP in general or Catholic High IP (as this is CHS thread)?

Ans : DS has ~50% chance of applying to CHS. Not trying to put other IP schools down, but it's my personal view that the school has a great IP on paper to compare with O levels. I say on paper because the most we can get to without a physical open house and as an outsider (and similar to other IPs elsewhere), is preferably feedback from those who have the actual experience. Are you in this category ?
With this background, it makes sense to compare the CHS O level and IP.

Yes, I can see a broader curriculum for IP as compared to O level for CHS, but being broader and better are two different things. Unless, e.g. there are signs that an IP curriculum develops certain skills not found easily in the O level programs ?
So the info on the websites was not quite what I was trying to find out.
Back to nagging questions though not the only key questions, and along the lines of A levels :
(a) how do IP students and JAE students fare in terms of A levels ?
(b) if 2 students go in to the school with the same T score (ok, psle exams don't measure everything), and complete their JC stints (ok, course combinations etc can be different), how do they compare by points (the 'closest' system to measure academic performance currently) ?
Yes, the questions don't just apply to CHS but to other O level/ IP comparisons as well, but there's slightly more vested interests from my end to understand things at a deeper level for CHS's case.

My son is in another IP school so I cannot offer much insight about CHS IP. We went to 3 IP schools’ Open Houses several years ago and curriculum for each is unique.

There is no better curriculum, just which one is more suitable for the child. Every year, there will be many students who qualify for IP but choose O Level track/ school.

In a nutshell, IP is more suitable for independent learners while O-Level programme is more structured. There will be more “drilling” in preparation for O-level exams for the latter.

IP schools do not reveal IP Vs JAE performance but I do not think there is much distinction in their A Level performance. Even within the same IP school, 2 students with similar PSLE results may perform differently in Sec and JC exams.

It is quite safe to say that majority of Catholic High students are not from its affiliated primary school.

Most boys will get closer to their classmates and CCA mates rather than their primary school mates unless they happen to be in the same Sec 1 class. The classes will split again in Sec 3 due to subject combination.

just curious… can anyone tell if there is a chunk of students from CHS who do take up Malay special program (MSP) and proceed to MOELC for lessons? does it clash with CCA/ curriculum/ extra classes?

can someone share how does CHS manage the science curriculum for lower sec? do they cover all 3 sciences concurrently or complete 1 science first then move on to another?
