Will anyone have the exam paper and help me to answer Q13b, Q14, Q15? These are questions to do with Circles and I really cannot solve. But I cannot upload pic. Will try to figure out when I really have the time!!!

But if you don't have, can help me with this question?
Container A contains 250 red marbles and 200 blue marbles.
Container B contains 600 red marbles and 150 blue marbles.
How many red and blue marbles must be moved form Container A to Container B such that 25% of the marbles in Container A are red and 75% of the marbles in Container B are red?

Ans: 350 - Can explain step by step? Thanks!

This is actually a basic olympiad problem if i am not mistaken. It can be solved with basic algebra requiring 5-6 steps.

On the contrary, this is a challenging problem sum and unlikely to appear in any maths olympiad other than nmos (even so it has probably not appeared in nmos yet).
Hi abc_parent,
Pls let readers of this forum know where did you get your questions from? Which level and exam paper? Otherwise, how do you expect readers to source for the exam paper and answer Q13b, Q14, Q15 for you?

Anyway, your questions are from Raffles Girls' Primary School P6 SA1 2009 Paper 2 set on 12 May 2009. The marble question is a 5-mark question from Q18 in paper 2.

Pls refer to http://psle2010a.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html for Uncle Observer's post dated Monday, 5 Apr 2010 where he had posted all the questions and detailed solutions for paper 2 of this exam paper.

Hope this helps.

Hi VC,

Thanks! you have excellent record of where questions are being discussed. And no, it is not misleading but I agree this is an unfair question as there are infinite answers, ie based on Uncle Observer, p=2 or any multiple of 42 would give an integer number for p, albeit the number are fairly large for the multiples. I suspect strongly that there is an error in how the question is being set.

Cheers,
MM
Hi MM,
Just an update. This \"unfair\" question was discussed in http://www.onsponge.com/forum/35-thinkingmathonsponge/950-real-hard-ratio.html. Pls take note of the comments made by Chris Rogers and Reynold which are helpful in the understanding of this question. It was a 5-mark Q17 from paper 2 - CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School P6 Prelim Maths 2009 set on 25 August 2009.

Hi Mathsguru and all maths experts,

Need your help with the below questions :

1) For time questions, is it true that the answer must be left in fraction and not decimal ? My DS wrote the answer as 37.5 h and the teacher marked him wrong. She said the answer should be 37 1/2 h. Thus, would like to check what is the practice for PSLE ? which is correct in PSLE context, 37.5 h or 37 1/2 h ?

2) Sarah started driving from Town A to Town B at 4.30am travelling at constant speed.
James left Town A for Town B three hours later than Sarah travelling at a constant speed of 120 km/h.
When James arrived at Town B, Sarah was still 160 km away from Town B. Two hours later, Sarah reached Town B.
a) Calculate Sarah’s average speed.
b) What time did James overtake Sarah ?

3) Denise, Ginny and Florence each made some bookmarks for sale.
At first, Denise had 1,365 bookmarks more than Ginny.
Then Denise sold 420 bookmarks and made another 175 bookmarks.
Florence sold 140 bookmarks and made another 350 bookmarks.
Ginny made some more bookmarks and her number of bookmarks doubled.
In the end, all the three girls had the same number of bookmarks.
Find the total number of bookmarks the three girls had at first.

4) The number of balls in Box A is 1/2 of the number of balls in Box B.
10% of the balls in Box A and 10% of the balls in Box B was moved to Box C.
As a result, the number of balls in Box C increased by 20%.
There are 72 balls in Box C now.
How many balls were there in Box B at first ?

5) Andy. Weizhi and Peter had a total of $4582.
After Andy had given 2/5 of his share to Weizhi, Weizhi then gave $55 to Peter.
As a result, the amount of money Peter had to the amount of money Andy had was in the ratio of 1 : 3.
If Weizhi had $725 at first, find the amount of money Andy had at first.

Thank you very much!!

I need help to solve this question

Troys monthly allowance is $42 more than Earls. Earl spends $54 more than troy every month. Earls savings is half of troys savings. If Troy spends 3/7 of his allowance every month, what is his allowance for the entire year?

Thank you for your help.
