      Hi Parents,

Anyone previously was considering between Writers at Work and The Alternative Story for creative writing classes? Kiddo is now in P5 and has a good command of vocab but I believe that will not be good enough. I would like to stretch him further. My colleague briefly mentioned Indigo to me . Honestly, i am not aware that Indigo is known for writing classes.

What were your findings and what decision did you eventually make? Will really appreciate your sharing of experience, thoughts, views etc.
Both of them have great reviews. Pick one that your child likes and is convenient for you.

hi, am also keen to hear reviews on Cognitus Academy or any other Eng Classes, not purely for Creative writing tho, ie. covering both paper 1 and 2. Tia!
You might want to try “Lil but mighty”. Great reviews. We attended their holiday class once and liked it.

It’s a review for the physical lesson at Clementi branch. I can’t comment on the other branches. As for the online version, my son’s friend tried it in P3 but didn’t find the marked feedback from the teacher useful.

Within my extended family, we have 5 kids who have tried TAS, Writing Samurai and also most recently From Tiny Acorns. All at different times and at different age.

TAS- we found that it is too rigid and most kids end up producing fairly similar story. As if kids were writing from templates. After 3 terms I think, the kids begged to stop.

WS online - we had P2 and P5 who joined for nearly a year. Given model compo but kids read and forgot. No difference from buying a model compo book for $6. Inconsistent quality of feedback. Not always useful. After entire year, no improvement in marks at all and we compared writing skill in start of year and end of the year… marginal improvement only.

From Tiny Acorns is a boutique enrichment centre and their writing programme is only during holiday. We have had wonderful experience with their other programmes so when they started the Writing Accelerator, we tried. Different from traditional writing class. More like hybrid of group and private tutor. So kids get class discussion and also private coaching to improve on personal writing. The emphasis was on improvement of individual writing skill. There was a 1 to 1 session before writing draft 2. Instead of the usual corrections, kids completed draft 2 with guidance on thinking and writing skills. I see this process as the biggest difference with the other centres. We sent 2 kids there. One better writer than the other. After just 4 weeks, both kids feedback they have learnt a lot. This year, we saw their compo marks went from 65% and 75% to now average 75% and 90% respectively. They only wrote 2 compo in school in Term2. So it must be the "effect" of the 4- weeks writing class.

There are a lot of reviews on their Facebook page. Left by happy parents. 😉 I think some in the facebook Reviews page and some as comments in their posts. I don't think you will see a lot of comments on kiasu parents because they do not advertise unlike the big centres. Most parents we met in the classes shared they knew about it because of word-of-mouth. Just like us! 😄
