I’m intending to give it a shot at CHIJ Our Lady of Good Counsel via phase 2C. As seen from the stats for the past few years, those living within 1-2km is pretty safe.

As we will be using grandparent’s address for this application (1-2km category), is it a ā€œsure inā€ for this year?

Not sure in, but very high chance.

Thank you! I’m dreading any balloting lol

Not sure if I should try my alumni in 2A1 - it’s the distance that puts me off...

              Hi I'm newbiešŸ¤—
Would like to ask as we sold our house in punggol and consider move to BoonKeng
for Hong Wen or new condo in Hougang for Holy innocent. My SG50 boy only eligible for 2C for both option. Any review or advice? Thks!

Both options are quite bad to be honest.

For Phase 2C, you are at most guaranteed a chance of balloting if you are < 1km. Above 1km, you won’t even stand a chance. Given that the risk of being balloted out is high (slightly better odds than 50% for Hong Wen, slightly lower than 50% for Holy Innocent), it may not be really worth the $ and time.

If you are really going to do the tikam-tikam, you may as well go for CHS, ACSJ, ACSP or SJIJ at probably similar odds. Otherwise, pick a school (such as SAJS or MSHS) where you are almost guaranteed of a place so that the $ and time isn’t wasted.

Thanks Floppy! Newbie that lost this post and just manage to get in again šŸ˜…
Just to update as we sold our house and bought the new one under construction official possession delivery date is 12/2024, called MOE said can't use new unit address for P1 registration. Anyway, we need to rent unit at hougang, so we will still try Holy innocent under 2C within 1km. Can advise gouging area any other primary school which is good to consider as back up plan? Any review on North Vista primary school? I also understand SG50 balloting is scaryšŸ˜…

For back up, there really aren’t many options. It’s either North Vista or Xinghua. If you are lucky, Montfort Junior may be available as option for ballot (which you can go for, since failing the ballot will most likely result in being posted to North Vista or Xinghua also).

North vista is consider good? Any reason of Xinghua primary school being so unpopular in last of the list of sg popular primary school?šŸ˜…

Frankly speaking, most of the primary schools in SK and HG 大同小异. The exceptions are probably Holy Innocent (SAP), NCPS and the few missionary schools.

My guess is Xinghua cannot escape from factors arising from demographics. It’s not located in a particularly young part of Hougang. Furthermore, the school’s catchment isn’t big as more than a quarter to nearly half of its catchment area under 2km are industrial estates.

What you can do to get feedback and review of the primary school is to stand outside the school’s gate before school and after school.

Observe the parents and the students getting to school.
You can see the students demographics, and culture - as well as other physical traits (eg do they behave well, how did they interact with their classmates, their parents, are they physically fit, etc.)

These will be the folks, the population that your child will be mixing in.

Last time, we can go into the school canteen to see how they ā€˜behave’ during recess.
Now with security etc, it is more difficult.
