      Hi parents/students,

My daughter is in sec2 this year, she didn't do well for science EOY given that the paper was quite easy. I feel her foundation is weak so I'm worried that she won't be able to do well for pure sciences. The school said most, if not all the students take pure sciences. However because of my daughter's results in relation to her cohort (majority scored A1 but she didn't) I might consider to let her take combined science so she can do better for sciences in O levels. Is it possible to take this subject in NCHS at sec3 level next year? Appreciate any advice given.

      Hi aoiiii,

There are many students out there who would love to be in your daughter's shoes. She should not feel discouraged but instead rejoices over the fact that she has the opportunity to still take on pure Sciences despite what it seems a one-time slip in her exam that she probably could have done better. Learning is a life long process. Let not a single exam discourages her.

I have seen so many \"late bloomers\" if you may, and all it takes is that moment of \"awakening\" in your child to turn things around and excel and take flight. I believe all she needs is a little more self confidence and encouragement from the parents. She certainly should not give up on the opportunity to pursue pure Sciences. As she embarks on her pure Sciences journey in Sec 3, things will just click and everything fall into place. She will look back one day and realize on hindsight that she made the right decision to go with pure Sciences.

All the best to you and your daughter!

      Thank you so much! 🙂

As long as it's a pass for olevels cl in sec 3 but some students decided to retake cl & forego hcl in sec 4 instead.

Hi, my child is going to Sec one next year. Based on her p5 results, she shd be able to get into Nan Chiau. However, she doesn’t like CL and she doesn’t take HCL. Would the nan Chiau envt be ok for her based on your own experiences? We stay in Punggol. So in terms of distance, this is a better choice.

I think you shouldn’t be picking schools based on COP.

If she doesn’t like green peas in her meals, how would feeding her green peas for breakfast, lunch and dinner make her like it more? There’s a strong likelihood that she will eventually start to even hate meal time.

                  hi,

based on my personal experience since my child is in this school, she is taking hcl too without taking it in primary school, so yes there is a certain level of difficulty for her but she tried her best. Chinese isn't her best subject in primary school either. But she survived her O level Chinese with an A1, which i think the school has done a good job in cultivating her love for Chinese after she entered the school. She never read Chinese story book in primary school but since the school has Chinese session in the morning, like 2-3 days, she pick up this habit and asked me to purchase since lower secondary. So, it really depends on how you look at it. Now i am happy that she reads and speak better mandarin, we are Chinese after all. Having said that, her friends speak in English mainly so its not like the school is super Chinese, they do celebrate Chinese festivals and the current principal is pretty encouraging in kids wanting to try to do hcl. I am staying near the school so yes, we picked the school based on the distance as well and not just the cop. Let's say, if your child do not take HCL, i think CL cannot be avoided too even if she goes to another school? Might as well go to a school that might help to cultivate her love for Chinese...hahah ok, just my own opinion as i believed the environment might shape or change the child in a positive way?

You might want to take the new AL into consideration that she will be ranked behind kids of similar AL but with HCL when she chooses a sap sch.
+ The fact that ranking of school choices matters in the new system.
Having said that, Olevels HCL is a totally different ball game from psle HCL but the kids cannot dislike Chinese lah.
The 2 bonus points from HCL can be gained from other subjects instead of focusing too much effort & time on passing HCL.
Btw, nchs ex P is now in Chung Cheng Yishun & it is affiliated to nyjc

Child’s like or dislike of a subject especially Chinese - can change quickly over night.

Especially when they have a good environment and teachers that will make Chinese or any other subjects fun.

                      So no worries about it.

Put it another way- the school Chinese department and the teachers are more worry that the students are not doing well (enough) than you (and the students)…

Thanks for the encouraging words. Whilst she says she doesn’t like CL, not hate, she did well enuf to be offered HCL. So there is a chance she will do fine. Hopefully there will be a virtual open house at least, so she can see for herself the school environment.
