Hi, considering this year is SG50 babies enrolling for P1, may i check on your thoughts of registering for St Andrews Junior in Phase 2C, 1-2km? What do you think the chances are?
Im debating between that or Hong Wen 2C, less than 1km? However, historically, Hong Wen has been very very hot in Phase 2C even for SC less than 1km. So Im counting my odds. -

SAJS probably ballot for <1km. At least HW have a chance to ballot <1km in your case.

Last year St Andrew’s ballot for those 1-2km. I expect this year to be the same.

However, this is only part of the story. For HW, we know that everyone < 1km will get a chance at that cherry. For SAJS, we do not know how many 1-2km is fighting for how many seats after those < 1km has taken them up. -

Oh I was under the impression that SAJS only required balloting for >2km last year. -
Oops sorry i was looking at Phase 2B…so ya u r right, SAJS needed balloting for phase 2C, 1-2km. Would we know the rbeakdown of that? How many students against how many slots 1-2km?

SAJS - 122 applicants going for 89 places. Ballot for 1-2km. No breakdown given.

HWS - 138 applicants going for 73 places. Ballot within 1km.
SAJS may seem like a better bet but without any breakdown, the story isn’t complete. It could be 79 applicants < 1km, leaving 43 to fight it out for 10 places or 49 applicants < 1km, leaving 73 to compete for the remaining 40 seats

Hi there,
Not sure if anyone has asked before…for Rosyth Phase 2A2 in 2020, this entire phase was skipped totally because of over subscription in 2A1! Looking at their past years numbers, 2A1 seems to get higher and higher…anyone has any explanation for this? We qualify for 2A2 this year, but worry if the same trend remains, have to look for back-up plan.
Thanks. -

I would suggest that you look for back up plans. If you are aiming for Rosyth, but only qualify for Phase 2A2, things don't look good. You may have a chance if you are < 1km but you are likely to be fighting for scraps and the odds won’t be good.

Rosyth isn’t the only school with higher and higher Phase 2A1 numbers. In fact, most of the popular schools are getting higher and higher Phase 2A1 numbers. No surprise that applicants are trying to get an advantage in an earlier phase. Just to name a few (alphabetically to C only!):
ATS from 84 (in 2019) to 110 (in 2020)
ACSJ from 88 to 107
CHIJ SNGS from 86 to 101
CHS from 104 to 125
etc
A few schools may have slight decline in numbers for Phase 2A1 but the overall increase overwhelmingly exceed the decrease.
The reason is quite straightforward. When you consider that newer schools with limited history, and schools in young / new housing estates are increasingly balloting < 1km, why shouldn’t those who are able to afford, pay the membership fee for an ease of mind and avoid balloting for a neighbourhood school at Phase 2C? If the places for those schools open up at Phase 2C, some (very few) might withdraw and re-apply.
Given that Rosyth is in Serangoon North, my guess is that many former students of Rosyth are probably residing in estates like Punggol and Sengkang (then again, it’s like half of all young parents are residing in those two estates
). When you look at the balloting figures for primary schools in these estates, coughing up for the alumni association membership fees and *almost* being guaranteed a spot without moving house is quite a fantastic deal.
